Renovation: insulated ceiling for bathroom?

by Christophe » 17/02/10, 11:09

We have to redo our bathroom and I would like to take the opportunity to improve the insulation of the ceiling by putting a false ceiling + insulation (height: 10 cm max for all)

What are the possible technical solutions and especially the materials given the humidity of a bathroom.

I have already seen wood paneling in bathrooms but is it really wise? Is a simple varnish enough for or does you need exotic wood? Otherwise PVC paneling but how does it age?

And for insulation apart from extruded polystyrene, is there an alternative that combines resistance to humidity and thermal performance in thin layers? Because even if you do everything you can to make the wainscot as waterproof as possible, there is still a good chance that moisture will pass after the years ...

Is a vapor barrier properly put or doubled sufficient and therefore makes it possible to use any insulation?

Cork is well suited in wet atmosphere.

yes cork is an alternative, but it is not cheap.

Regarding the PVC paneling, I have it in my bathroom which is 8 years old, and it is still in very good condition.
After it's always the same, there's paneling and paneling I think.

Ah yes not thought of cork, thank you.

Well for a small thickness (4 or 5 cm) it should not be too expensive if?

There are cork products for finishing :?:

bathroom insulation

by tigrou_838 » 23/02/10, 15:57

hello, what I did at home, not wanting to redo the ceiling of the bathroom,
under the plako of the ceiling, I fix wooden slats of 5 / 5cm of recup, and the top I fixed pvc slats (not expensive), that makes a layer of air between the pvc and the plako, therefore better insulation.

I could have put more insulation in this 5cm space.

the house is well insulated by the lost roof space with 30cm of flake insulation.

for the ventilation of the bathroom, there is the mouth of the vmc, connect to a programmer, 3x 1 hour per day during the hours of current use.

Yes Tigger, that's the idea, battening + insulation between battening + PVC or wood paneling ... I don't know yet ...

But how does it fix the PVC paneling without "drilling" into it? Is it stuck or?

There are no species of staples that slip into the groove. Or in other models there is a tongue covered by the next slat. We staple in the tongue.

Ah ok thank you, so you have to "drill" the PVC but it's in the groove. Like laying nails for the wood paneling so ...

hi, yes, fixing this done with a simple hand stapler, as say not elephant, you staple in the tongue which is covered by the next slat.

with 15cm wide slats, the ceiling is quickly done, you spend more time fixing the batting.
