Fire in northwest California, state of emergency declared

(AFP) - 7 hours ago

LOS ANGELES - California's deputy governor (west), John Garamendi, declared a state of emergency on Friday in northwest Santa Cruz County, where a fire has already raged since Wednesday. the evacuation of more than 2.000 people.

"A major fire is hitting Santa Cruz County and the needs are enormous to support what is being done locally to fight the flames," John Garamendi said in a statement.

"I saw the damage and went to the operations center, and this fire is far from over," he added.

The California department of fire prevention (Calfire) said Friday on its website that the county of Santa Cruz, 560 km northwest of Los Angeles, had ordered the evacuation of 2.200 to 2.400 people and that more than 250 houses were threatened by flames in the communes of Swanton and Bonny Doon.

According to the same source, the fire has already devoured more than 1.600 hectares of vegetation and was only controlled at 5%.

The wind that is currently blowing in the region makes the work of the nearly 700 firefighters deployed on the site difficult.

In addition, the rough terrain makes ground operations almost impossible and fire can only be fought from the air.

The state of emergency will provide Santa Cruz with financial support and assistance for the reconstruction of the infrastructure.

The causes of the fire are still unknown, according to Calfire.

Californian firefighters have also been fighting, since last Saturday, against a fire hitting the Los Padres natural park, which extends north of Santa Barbara, in a very sparsely populated region.

By Friday, according to Calfire, the flames had destroyed more than 27.000 hectares of vegetation and 10% of the fire was under control, mobilizing more than a thousand firefighters.

California is frequently the victim of flames. In 2007, it had suffered the worst fires in its history. 640.000 inhabitants had been evacuated and 2.000 homes destroyed.
