No, it only works if the wind is "downwind" up to ~ 50 ° from the axis, beyond that the drift is too important, in short it is of limited interest ... Otherwise to "go upwind" with a "real" modern sailboat, you have to tack at ~ 40 ° from the wind axis, which considerably increases the route: no interest in a freighter with "assistance" sailing, the main propulsion still being diesel ...
Note that the old commercial sailboats were easy to fill
~ 18 knots if the wind was there ...

Not at all ! The SkySails system is of a very high technicality, with lots of inertial units to know at all times the position of the sail and operate motors to stabilize it. The kite must stand in the air absolutely on its own. It is a technological feat.

Now, this system is only valid for the rack. It is therefore valid on certain courses, on the Atlantic and the Pacific ... unless you sail with the wind, when there are!
