except that 1 kg of GNV contains 13.5 thermal kWh, while 1 kg of petrol contains 8.8 KWh

There is 50% more heating power in 1 kg of CNG than in 1 kg of gasoline.

This is because the energy of the CH bond is stronger than the DC bond.

It is not the mass that interests, but rather the calorific value obtained for 10 €, eg. From this calorific value flows proportionally the distance traveled.

thanks for correcting my mistake

the calorific value at kg is almost constant for gasoline and LPG ... but completely different for methane

we must redo the previous calculation

8,8kwh gasoline / kg

methane 13,5 kwh / kg

13,5 / 8,8 = 1,53

1,1 euro / Kg / 0,7 = 1,57 euro / liter
1,57 / 1,53 = 1,02 euro / liter equivalent essence

Carburant: the GNV tries a breakaway
Cleaner than diesel and gasoline, Natural Gas for Vehicles (CNG) is attracting more and more carriers, but still suffers from a limited distribution network to develop with the general public.

July 21, 2015

More discreet than the electric and the hybrid, natural gas for vehicles (NGV) nevertheless traces its furrow and is becoming increasingly important in the purchase of new vehicles throughout the world.

On the environmental side, it shows 95% reduction of particulate emissions and 85% reduction of NOx (nitrogen oxides) compared to diesel (*).

Its CO2 emissions are 25% lower than gasoline and 10% lower than diesel (*). The noise pollution is halved and the combustion emits no smell (*). In addition, biomethane, the renewable version of CNG produced from biomass, waste or household waste, has a carbon neutral balance (*).

An eco-responsible solution

Motivated by their environmental balance sheets, more and more carriers and prime contractors are choosing NGV. This is the case of Transports Mauffrey who have integrated a truck Iveco Stralis GNV 40 tons to their fleet. The decision was made following the request of Placoplatre, customer of the carrier who wanted to benefit from a responsible solution vis-à-vis the environment to deliver its customers in Paris and Île-de-France.

A favorable economic equation

"On the economic level, the GNV gives us satisfactory answers because it is cheaper than diesel and its consumption is lower," says Jerome Grassi, technical director of Transports Mauffrey.

According to the French Association of Natural Gas for Vehicles, compared with diesel, the consumption is reduced by 5% and the profit on the pump price is 8%. Even though this comparison dates back to the end of 2012 at a time when diesel prices were higher, these advantages remain and allow us to offset the additional cost of the purchase.

Carrefour carbide with CNG

On the French territory, the most ambitious deployment is to credit Carrefour. Last March, the company announced the commissioning of 200 biomethane trucks by 2017.

This fleet will deliver Carrefour stores located in Paris, Lyon, Bordeaux, Marseille and Lille. This transaction is part of the company's plan to reduce the company's environmental footprint, which aims to reduce 40%'s greenhouse gas emissions between 2009 and 2020.

Silence is golden

Thanks to its biomethane heavyweights, Carrefour expects a drop in 20 000 tons of its CO2 emissions in three years. In addition to the benefits in terms of local pollution and global warming, the distributor also insists on the reduction of noise pollution. Its biomethane trucks comply with the international PIEK standard, which guarantees a sound level below 65 dB, the equivalent of a normal conversation between two people.

Pumps still too rare

Although CNG is gradually gaining market share, its development among the greatest number still faces an obstacle: in France, only 300 is open to the public on 40's existing supply stations.

It's hard to buy a CNG vehicle when the nearest station is tens of kilometers away from your area of residence. To fill this gap, a European directive asks the national governments to densify their network.

If the objective is reached, the French Association of Natural Gas for Vehicles estimates that in 2035, 10 20% of land vehicles will roll on French roads with this energy. It is still necessary that the European intentions are followed by effects on the hexagonal soil.

GNV in numbers

Today, more than 17 million vehicles operate on CNG worldwide. Between 2000 and 2010, this number has increased by 18% per year, then 25% by 2011 and 2012 (source: NGV Global).

NGVA Europe and International Gaz Union, associations promoting this energy, estimates that 2020, 65 million GNV vehicles will roll on roads around the world, 9% of the fleet.
In France, the latest figures are from 2013. By that date, the hexagonal CNG fleet was bringing together 2 400 buses, 800 garbage trucks, 200 trucks and 10 000 cars and vans.

Be careful not to mix:
- "natural" gas which is fossil methane and, as such, should remain where it is, ie in the ground to avoid releasing fossil CO2

- bio-methane, which is manufactured mainly by anaerobic digestion and recovery of household waste and avoids emissions into the atmosphere of this gas whose harmful effects on the greenhouse effect are 21 times superior to CO2 ...

For the record, natural gas was used in vehicles from the 60 years until the 80 years and came mainly from the Lacq Aquitain deposit, operated by ELF.
With the depletion of this deposit, this fuel was replaced by LPG, a mixture of Butane and Propane which had the immense advantage of being liquefied at 8 bar to occupy only 1 / 200ème of its gas volume whereas the methane had to be compressed at 200 bar to occupy 200 times less volume which requires powerful compressors (electricity hungry) and very strong tanks ...

Fuels: Will natural gas find its place?

By Giulietta Gamberini The 22 / 09 / 2016 Tribune

The world's first alternative to gasoline and diesel, natural gas is still used in France by only a few thousand vehicles, including heavy trucks. However, in its renewable form, it could contribute to various objectives of the energy transition law. To boost supply and demand, Ademe has just launched a call for projects, while 15 million euros will be devoted to the construction of a dozen stations in Île-de-France.

13.500 vehicles in France, against more than 18 million in the world and one million in Italy. And forty stations open to the public while they are, respectively, 990 and 840 beyond the Alps and Germany. France is definitely not at the forefront in the development of natural gas for vehicles (NGV), of fossil origin as renewable. A delay doubtless linked to the privileged place traditionally reserved for electricity in France, then to public policies to support diesel, and now the fruit of a vicious sequence between the scarcity of supply and demand: is probably no coincidence that the few vehicles running on CNG in France are mainly buses, dumpsters and fleets of companies with private stations to eat.

methane is not the ideal fuel

to store 10kg of gasoline or diesel you need a reservoir of almost negligible weight

for stoker 10 kg butane for propane you need a bottle of 10kg! storage doubles the weight

to store 10 kg of methane you need a 100kg bottle ... it's heavy and it limits the autonomy ... it "would only be usable if there were a lot of service stations to compensate for the low autonomy ... if we want a great autonomy we overload the vehicle and we waste energy carrying too heavy bottles

30 years ago there was angouleme a methane filling station (gas lacq) and some customers with big bottle on the roof ... it was not very practical: the station had no compressor so could not necessarily fill at 200 bar following the bottle she was still full: it was some truck semi trailer with a multitude of big bottle and a pile of tap: when it was filling his vehicle he began filling with the bottle low pressure and then finished with the bottle containing more pressure ... he would have had a compressor it would have been better, but according to the seller it was forbidden

The title of the topic is clear. : roll:

It's about driving cheaper, not being efficient or ecologically relevant.
Just to ensure the profits of a fossil fuel supplier and the related industry (manufacturers of tanks and kits for thermal engines, distribution network, ...).

Vannes. A natural gas station for heavy trucks

Valves - Published the 04 / 10 / 2016

A natural gas distribution station for heavy goods vehicles will be installed in Vannes by next summer. A first in Brittany.

A natural gas distribution station for heavy goods vehicles will be installed in Vannes next summer. Exploiting the electrical terminals of the department for two years, Morbihan Energy will mount it near the exchanger of the RN165 and its transport companies. According to a survey conducted last year, a dozen of them would be interested in investing in vehicles running on natural gas vehicles (NGV). Cheaper and cheaper from methanation, natural gas emits much less fine particles and greenhouse gases than diesel. The station will have two automatic pumps directly connected to the natural gas line. With a 1 250 flow rate m3 / h, they will be full in 10 minutes, against 15 for a full tank of diesel.
