Honda FCX, 1ere hydrogen fuel cell car on the market

by Christophe » 08/09/08, 19:15

I just wrote a little article on the Honda FCX Clarity which brings together various news and performances, notably from the official website (in English).

The Honda FCX Clarity, 1ere fuel cell car for the general public Source of figures and data: Honda.com

The Honda FCX Clarity is an electric motor car powered by a hydrogen fuel cell. It therefore only releases water, but its overall balance is not that interesting (see below).

It is derived from the "Honda Accord Hybrid" series with a V Flow 1 type fuel cell.

It is a 5-seater, 5-door car, available in limited production since June 2008 in Japan and the United States.

The following: Honda FCX Clarity

Important information that I calculated:

equivalent "virtual" gasoline consumption of 15,2 / 4,5 = 3,38 L / 100.

Interesting but not spectacular especially since this figure does not take into account the gray energy of hydrogen ...

ps: see also the individual H2 station by Honda

There's a problem with the 100 km consumption in your article ...

Ah shit yes ... I think there is a coef (/3.8) to apply (because the conso on the Honda site are given, apparently, given in MPG but a Gallon of H2 what is that ??)!

An idea? : shock:

Poop, from what I understand, these are estimates based on the efficiency of the process ...
They must express them in value known to the American public, so a conversion into gasoline, I suppose?

The Clarity would consume 1 kg of H2 per 100 km. 8)

We can hardly say that it is a general public car, we do not know its price and the Clarity project manager said that Honda hoped to put a car in PAC H2 on sale from 2012 for a price of 10 million yen, that's 60000 euros! : Shock:

Toyota has also rented a hydrogen PAC car in Japan, but the price is much higher than the $ 600 for the Clarity in California, it is rather in the $ 6000 (see Toyota Japan).

About the Clarity, there is a 22 page pdf file of the Honda England website (always very well documented, there are the Honda manuals, downloadable for free despite their 800 or 1000 pages).

MPG Petrol equivalent then? This is what I was thinking about.

It is therefore necessary to convert 1 Gallon of gasoline into kg of H2 or:

Energy of a Gallon: 3,8 * 32,4 = 123 MJ / kg
Energy of one kg of H2: 120 MJ / kg

Oh miracle, the 2 values are very close, so we can equate 1 kg of H2 to 1 US gallon of gas!

So we get:
City / Highway / Combined: 77/67/72
which give: 123 km / 107 km / 115 km per kg of H2
hence the H2 consumption of: 0,81 / 0,93 / 0,87 kg of H2.

It sticks Leo with your data! I corrected the article!

and we find, at best, 4,1 / 0,81 = 506 km of autonomy (470 taking the combined cycle)

ps: general public may not be but offered to the general public all the same ...

Huh $ 6000 leasing? How is such a difference possible?

The engine is 95 kW and maybe two engines of 50 kW each in steered wheels is a bit heavy to manage!

Moué not convinced especially that of the wheel motor we can put 4 ... without problem ... I think that Honda is simply not at the point on this technology and did not want to subcontract.
