Hello,
I am about to acquire a second vehicle which should be closer to:
-economic with purchase 1500 € +/- 30%
- economical to use
-likely to do a little freeway from time to time
- rather oriented short and regular displacements
-4/5 seater
-4/5 doors
On this basis, I have the impression that the following vehicles would roughly meet the demand:
Ax 1.5 D year> 1994
Saxo 1.5D year> 1997
Zx 1.9 D year> 1996
There are also the 205 but I have the impression that they are rarer on occasion.
Do you have any ideas, comments and experiences with these vehicles or other proposals ?!
Thank you in advance.

The 1.9D from PSA is very reliable provided you don't shoot like a pig all the time.
Present on a good package of Peugeot and Citroen vehicles from the 90s.
For 1500 € you will find quite a few but with a little km anyway (I would say 150000-200000 km).
But even with such mileage, you just have to check the levels and a bit of maintenance on the accessories so that you never have big problems with this type of car.
Personally, I bought a 5 1984l gasoline super1.4 for 400 €.
I spent a few weekends on it because I broke the gearbox because of a bad mannip but it rolls nickel although it is in its juice (old plastics, torn textiles, rust on the body ... ).
In addition on these old cars, everything is available in the car breaker as long as you want to put a little hands in the oil.
Just modification, a bit of a tool and especially the technical review of the car and roll my chicken.
I do Paris-Liège (400km) every month with my puppy and no worries.
The only thing I can advise you for this type of vehicle is to check that there is no rust on the chassis and that the engine is running.
But you must not be too watchful despite everything, there is a good chance that you will have to change something on it one day or the other.
I assure you it is often accessories (heating, fire, power steering pump). It's easy to change and it teaches you a little bit about mechanics.
Good luck for your research.

The vehicles you have selected are excellent choices.
The 1.7L and 1.9LD atmo is very enduring, it can easily cover 400.000 km with good maintenance and careful use.
The 1.L and 1.5L of the AX are more fragile. Maintenance should not be neglected. Oil distribution belts, gearbox emptying every 100.000 km are important.
When the vehicles have passed 10 years, it is not uncommon for them to heat up, very often, the calorstat (less than 15 €) is the cause. Replace it before it is too late (leaking radiator or loose head gasket).
Citroëns are traditionally less priced, lighter, more aerodynamic and less greedy. They are also less "sexy", which explains their reasonable rating.

For 1500 € ... It would surprise me that he finds less than 200 000km ... Even if they are old people's cars ...
In view of the age ... For a ZX make sure that the two radiators and the rear axle have been changed.
The 1.4D was fragile the 1.5 is quite robust.
By the way mine only has 375km (the engine has only 220)

Had an AX Diesel and a ZX 1.9 D and a Xantia 1.9 TD.
1) AX super chassis, handling, nothing to say. But "sardine box" (thin sheet + plastic). Do not meet heavy weights in dire circumstances or it is death. Be aware of it!
Engine "quite fragile", cast aluminum for the weight, but less sturdy (I had a problem with the head gasket without overheating around 320 km - and sold it).
2) Indeed, the 1.9 D (XUD) is a real "workhorse". No other word! It is not for nothing that it resists valiantly in vans like C15!
Very good handling, a little plastic too. All the same a little more reassuring than the AX.
Indeed, mine, at 340 km no longer passed technical control due to the deformed rear axle. Repair cost: more than € 000. Not found for scrap because design flaw.
So breakage management (I bought € 1 for 500 km; I got a scrappage bonus - no complaints!).
After 6 months under an apple tree, it started off quickly! For me, by far the best engine of the time!
3) Xantia: with age, the turbo should be less swift. From where “cloud of smoke” behind me during hardly supported accelerations. I had become a big polluter, contradicting my convictions (and my remarks on particulate emissions from badly operated wood boilers).
Problem on the injection pump in addition. Would have required an expensive intervention. And on the "metering device" (equivalent of the master cylinder on the brakes / hydraulic circuits). So again, direction the breakage at 325 km.
But it was a gem of a "roller" / handling / heading.

hello why a diesel french gasoline engines sound as good as the diesels especially if you only make short trips, you will find a car with less than km and for a french one it is important because a case of + DE 150000 KM c is the beginning of the pb in chain, you will always have your hands in it because the box and the block are costal but the rest aged very badly (electrical accessory silent block etc)
if I will be you for less pb research rather a small German more expensive though but less daredevil ... e maintains and they have proven themselves too.
In a budget it's not just the fuel that stays fast too
and spend his life broken it ends up swelling serious with age.
For a French one? For this number of km do not put more than 1000 euro knowing that the repair budget will be equivalent to the purchase price of the car over time
amicalement

every morning you look naked in a large ice after 3 minutes you will see that your home and your worst picture ......
Thank you all for your comments!
For Macro, I add that I am looking for a vehicle of less than 200 km if possible. Thanks for the proposal anyway.
For lv13r, I have the impression that diesels consume less than petrol and the possible additional cost of a diesel is relatively quickly amortized.
Until today I have had only diesels and am quite satisfied with them.
The youngest was a 205 GRD which did not resist a percussion with a deer. Too many costs to foresee, therefore breakage, therefore search for a vehicle ... the guigne because I was really super satisfied despite its 295 KKm.
For essences, why not, but I have no idea what it can last, consume, cost to use ...
