A new hydrogen combustion engine

Transport and new transport: energy, pollution, engine innovations, concept car, hybrid vehicles, prototypes, pollution control, emission standards, tax. not individual transport modes: transport, organization, carsharing or carpooling. Transport without or with less oil.

A new hydrogen combustion engine

by Christophe » 09/03/07, 10:14

European researchers, in association with American partners, have developed a new hydrogen technology making it possible to produce hydrogen engines of a new type and with better efficiency intended for equipping non-polluting cars.

The EU-funded Hydrogen internal combustion engine (HyICE) project has tested hydrogen engines that are as efficient as current diesel engines, but less polluting and with no noticeable difference in fuel consumption. volume and engine power.

Researchers hope that these hydrogen-powered engines will offer clear advantages over current-generation engines and can be competitive with other propulsion systems and thus give drivers the same level of performance and cost. they are entitled to expect.

Taking the internal combustion engine as a starting point, the members of this three-year project led by the inventor of the automobile, BMW, set out to develop new parts such as injectors and an ignition system, as well as preparing Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) tools to optimize the mixture formation and combustion process.

“The combustion engine is one of the most advanced industrial products. Its development is based on a century of investment. It offers high levels of performance and variability along with low costs and easy day-to-day maintenance,” said Professor Raymond Freymann, Head of Research and Technology at BMW Group.

Do you agree with that Christopher? I doubt !

Uh ... JOKER! : Mrgreen:

Yes and no...

1) Yes, because there has been a lot of money invested (we can easily speak of tens of millions of hours of research and development) and improvements throughout the XNUMXth century (even if many people think that the improvements could have gone faster...especially currently)...

2) No because the principle remains fundamentally the same as at its origin: piston, connecting rod, 4 tps, valves... etc etc

It is because of 1) that I believe very little in the development of new "revolutionary" engine concepts which should all (according to the inventor) replace the principle stated in 2)... It is also for this reason that I believe more in the combustion of hydrogen (in doping for example) than in the fuel cell...bustible : Mrgreen:

Am I clear? : Mrgreen:
