On petrol if you cut the battery the engine still works, it
is powered by the alternator, this is the best way to know if
the alternator is good.

Why not charge the bis battery with a solar panel?

you will need lots of photovoltaic cells.
an alternator is around 40 A I believe, 40A and 12V with photovoltaic cells ...
