I am Ernestine an R4TL doped with water for the participation in the 4L trophy 2010 which took place in Morocco from February 18 to March 1, 2010.
I have 138 km on the odometer, a cylinder capacity of 000cm1100 and my first entry into circulation is dated 3. I also have a mechanical and an engine of hell and I now have 1987 2L trophy in the rims.
The presentations being made and to speak in a more concrete and relevant way about our approaches and achievements, I am at your disposal to feed all your curiosities concerning the following points:

What worries in raid with the Pantone?
Were you a bubbler or a GVI?
You must have done a lot of track, it must have shaken, what impact on the Pantone and the generation of steam?
On quieter roads, have you noticed an economy with this type of engine?

Water doping VS track
We have installed a steam generation version on our 4L water doping. Why?
When you leave for a Raid nothing is common and you have to manage with the means at hand to continue to advance. We therefore needed a water doping module which corresponds to our use. We contacted Alexandre Grégoire, president of the association La pierre anugulaire http://lapierreangulaire.free.fr, because its system stood out from other assemblies encountered with regard to our use.
So we don't have a bubbler, this means:
In addition the system is looped on itself, that is to say that we do not re-inject our exhausts into the circuit. Which could be dangerous when the tank is empty.
So for us going to the desert, it meant:

Our steam generator suffered the consequences of towing in the tracks of a 4x4 by breaking the water supply. Otherwise we had been careful to position the GVI vertically to avoid water rising in the system according to the inclination of the car (this is not always easy depending on the vehicles).
Regarding savings, very hard to see especially with a gallery on the roof a large load in the trunk.

After a 10km when I lack water I notice it
If the driver is not too attentive to his engine,
put an Oxygene sensor with a small digital volt meter 0-2 volts you will notice when there is more water.
If you want to be more precise, also put a 0-35 inch mercury dial, with vacuum on the intake manifold, you will always have the engine load

Hello,
To re-situate the context, I am talking about our experience on a Raid that is done on and off piste. It is therefore difficult to be attentive to listening to your engine to find such a small difference. Because between reading the Road book, keeping your course, forcing the gear change so as not to get stuck in the Oued etc ... and all this while trying to hear the sound of its engine when the stones massacre the underside of the car ... Here is a detail that we voluntarily leave aside. We had bet on a 10L tank to optimize our water supply.
However, the intermediate Bivouacs were in the middle of the desert so no water supply other than the distribution of 4L of drinking water per day. We had a consumption of one liter per 100 km. In the desert, we filled on the fly 1 liter here and a half liter there. However, one of the hoses started to be porous and a loss of water started to appear before we hit a stone which tore off this hose 3 days later. For the probe it is a very good idea and I will see what could be judiciously useful and coherent for this system. But for our part, filling up with water when filling up with petrol is enough to never run out. In our case it was very hard to sacrifice our own water for the pentone system. It happened to us only once to be under water for the system and we did not have anything to remedy it 150km from the finish of the stage. So we continue without.
Otherwise the entry of steam is done above the carburetor, but I would like to pass it below. If people we type of installation. Is there better combustion of the mixture? or other advantage?

Our exhaust is very very hot, which caused hardening and then the porosity of the hose during the 1800km (which separates the Stade de France from Algéciras) in less than 48 hours. These very calorific exhausts for my part increases the generation of vapor therefore the consumption of water.
Here someone has experience on this axis.
