Gaza: why South Africa is challenging Israel before the International Court of Justice

South Africa has urgently appealed to the highest court of the United Nations to order Israel to “immediately suspend its military operations” in the Gaza Strip. A request which can be explained in particular by historical motivations – the ruling party has long supported the Palestinian cause, associated with the fight against apartheid – and domestic politics, a few months before the next elections.

it is a country very far from Israel and not too linked to the United States or NATO or the Arab world.

It's not a complete explanation, that's for sure. Why it’s especially them who are stepping up to the plate, I don’t know.

Under apartheid, South Africa sought to acquire the atomic bomb.
She also colluded with Israel to detonate its test bombs off the coast of Africa (towards the southeast).
Then she definitively abandoned everything about this nuclear research.

Could there be an old dispute/dispute between the 2 countries?

That's what I assumed: an old resentment not swallowed...but which one? (gegyx has a hypothesis that I didn't know about...)

But given that the South Africa of yesterday is not at all the same as that of today...the research is even more complicated...
