I came across this thesis completely about the surface treatment of materials by plasma. There are interesting curves.

Hello

Since the planing of the cylinders of aircraft engines with Cermaninil or the old Chromé (chipped surface) the segments are treated with plasma, the first tries, segment in cast iron had a rather short lifespan
In a cast iron or treated steel cylinder engine, cast iron segments are used, the first fire breaker is chromed on the friction part on the cylinder.
The segments must be compatible with the type of material of the cylinder, much like the brake pads must be compatible with the disc, the mixture of the elements causes premature wear.
When asbestos disappeared from the composition of these materials, there were several years of hardship to find materials likely to make good household

(Off topic)
Sometimes I wonder in a city all this dust from the brakes and clutches that breathe us if it is not bad for health
