External insulation, straw on breeze block?

by Pom of Happy » 26/03/08, 12:33

Hello,
I inherited a magnificent concrete block house from the 1960s.
I would like to renovate it and insulate it from the outside, I think of straw in a bundle covered with lime with an overhang of roof 80cm, but knowing that I live in a windy and rainy region, I wonder if my choice is wise. What do you think and maybe can you advise me another technique?

thanks POM

Hi Pom d'Happy.
You may live in Brittany, your choice is in my opinion quite judicious, you will just have to make sure to make the right lime plaster that is going well, which will protect your wall from the rains.
I would also advise you to wedge your straw bales between the concrete blocks and a wooden frame.
Research the forum, we already talked a lot about straw.

And when you have finished your work, think about giving us a little report.

Hello,
seen in "ecological renovation", very good project, sufficient breathable lime plaster against rain, on the other hand they fix the boots on the concrete block wall via threaded rods!

Uh, isn't there a little bug on this thread? I had consulted it in the middle of the day since my job, and as the last 2 posts called out to me, I wanted to see them again this evening, and possibly see the continuation, but these two messages had disappeared (Bham and Christine if I remember well ...) . Have they been knowingly deleted or is it a malfunction ???

Ah, well yes, yours is back ... !! ??? Weird, not Christine's, too bad it was in hers that there was a link that interested me ...

Ah unless I was wrong in the order of the messages (in the field of the very possible ...), in which case, only that of Christine would have disappeared ...

So obvious ... will they do the rest of the block or will they have greased themselves enough with 1/10?

By volume, straw is cheaper than chemical wools and is self-supporting !! So why does the entrepreneur want us to believe the opposite ...?

It remains to be seen the resistance to rodents (there are more rats in Paris than Parisians) and to the various possible biological attacks ... (mushrooms and others) ...
