Book on the insulation of a house?

by Forhorse » 16/01/12, 18:36

Hello everybody

Do any of you have one or more good books on insulating a home accessible to a handyman (lit I think)
Rather geared towards traditional materials and techniques (glass / rock wool)
I am going to have my house to be insulated and I would like to do things correctly, especially with regard to the treatment of the roof and condensation problems.
Until now I was content to do things "on the spur of the moment" and on intuition but it seems that my intuition is not always good : Mrgreen:

No need for a book: you have this forum... and the net to find everything you need. In addition it will be up to date! The books on insulation are generally no longer up to date with current standards (RT2005, RT2012 ...)

I think you know that there are more economic than mineral wools (taking into account their lifespan ...) : Cheesy:

Yes, and condensation is a very difficult problem to understand in order to avoid very easy errors, depending on weather conditions and construction structure.

Hi, I highly recommend the excellent book:
bioclimatic design

http://www.ecologie-pratique.org/articl ... climatique

very serious and didactic. I get a lot of inspiration from it for my future and ongoing crafts.

The bioclimatic design is good but a little too general and the recommended thermal resistance values are too fair.

In the same genre and by the same authors I believe there is "Ecological insulation".

Okay with that.

Despite the beautiful attempts of this thread and this forum to popularize the principle of thermal insulation, and the fact that it is better to do everything possible to insulate his home ... I find that for new constructions of passive houses, a handyman can hardly get away with it all alone, it has become so sharp.

I'm not looking to know the standards or discover the latest fashionable materials.
My goal is to learn a little of the "rules of the art" as they say. Know how to we put an insulator (and not find which one to put) to avoid the basic mistakes that transform a house that we think is well insulated into a colander and sponge.

Most DIY books are either too general and talk about everything from foundations to painting without going into details, or then become super sharp with thermal resistance calculation, etc ... without necessarily talking about installation methods nor the "knack" that make the difference between a handyman and a professional.
So I'm looking for a book that addresses insulation from a practical and concrete point of view.

The scientific guiding threads, to have in the brain, which justify each action, in the insulation with values thermal conduction, thermal capacity, diffusivity, and inertia and properties of still air, even the convections to block, and the point of dew and condensation if wet and cold:

with air and water vapor permeability:

Crucial:

A complete book course to read in all its pages:

etc ..

I stop, because I think there is no book giving all this well digested, and even more serious there is not only a good solution, depending on the choice, waterproof and less.

For the poses, see the sites of the manufacturers, with material by checking that they are in agreement with the basic physics.

Fun the date 1972 !!!
It may be the Obamot bible, but since it dates from 1972, it is out of the race, sold at € 10, especially on what is recent and which was completely ignored in the past, and which I put in the very incomplete recent links:
http://documentation.2ie-edu.org/cdi2ie ... ee&id=5011
This link has its server domiciled in Burkina Faso ????
The building: Masonry technology, materials, implementation, calculations
Document type: printed text
Authors: Gérard Baud
Edition statement: 3rd ed. rev. and augm.
Publisher: Lausanne: Éditions Spes
Year of publication: 1972
Collection: Professional library
Importance: 1 vol. (446 p.)
Presentation: ill., Cover ill. coul.
Format: 28 cm
Languages: French (fre)
Categories: 690 Buildings

In addition this website of the Obamot link is in Burkina Faso !!
Keywords: CONSTUCTION BUILDING CONSTRUCTION SITE CONSTRUCTION ELEMENT
Index. decimal: 690.1 The various elements: walls, roofs ...

The BBC and the ITE, etc., cannot be there in 1972 !!!

While in a few years everything is obsolete, and I think that we will quickly discover problems in the BBC, a few years after receipt and therefore changes again, constantly, which makes it important to respect the physical basic, which it will not change, instead of not understanding well.
