Ahmed wrote:Soldering the top sleeve to the merlin iron isn't a bad idea, but the zinc isn't going to make things any easier. As for assembly, I do it a little differently: I tend to split the sleeve and adapt it to the handle in one piece (but it is possible in two...), then I tighten strongly in the vice to bring the metal closer to the wood and I weld two staples across to hold it in place...
I noticed the skew of the slit in your handle and I think it was an initial weakness. Normally the wood fibers should be parallel for maximum strength.

Did not understand everything ? My merlin has a sort of metal corner in the center of the handle on the mass side…

I think that adapting a handle is as risky as my repair…

Fiberglass handles aren't bad, but they cost a lot more.
On the other hand, a metal handle never lasts, it is much too unpleasant to use because it transmits shocks and vibrations much more.

I went to a pro store this morning...I confirm: there is nothing standard about the handles (around €10 for an ash handle)!

A “merlin” handle is not necessarily compatible with all merlins, the proof:

This is how the sleeves look... there is a "corner" sealed by a metal piece (I don't know its overall shape? A cone?)

The metal part can be recovered from the old one, the corner must be made...since it is not supplied with the new handles...

There were oval composite handles for €25...but the storekeeper couldn't tell me if they were compatible with the merlins, in short he too was a little lost... : Mrgreen:

In short, if my repair doesn't hold up, I know where to go...

the composite material handle is pretty good.

I have some heavy weights that have these handles, they produce less vibrations than the steel tube handle, even if it is less solid.

The wooden handle breaks all the time after a while, and not necessarily for that long.

Yes, we already said that above...composite is the best, plus what I saw this morning, it's Made In Italy (and therefore not China)...

Composite is what I would do if my thing doesn't hold (but it will hold... : Cheesy: : Cheesy: )!

ps: while my hands were dirty, I soldered my hammer and my hammer yesterday... : Mrgreen:

in the photos, there is a hardwood corner, stabilized by a cylindrical corner.

That's it ! But it's not supplied with the handles...so it's not permanently mountable!

Naughty, what a hassle this story of sleeves is! Fortunately we are not sleeves (although...)!

ps: so these are indeed some kind of cones, the metal corners...
