How to Repair a 12V battery charger?

by Henri48 » 11/10/13, 16:06

Hello,
I just had a bad surprise: my car battery charger (Norauto) no longer works! It was quietly stored in the cellar. My neighbor tells me that this kind of material does not like moisture. Is there a component of the circuit that, classically, breaks down with moisture? Thank you for your reply. Henry

it's a black block with a single button?
I also had a PB with mine, the button did not react anymore.
After replacing this button it worked perfectly again.

Is it a battery charger or a battery killer? (the kind of device sold 2 balls and which controls neither the current nor the charging voltage)
If it's the second answer then you can dump it without regret

what does the fuse say?
if you do not see it, take a picture of the 2 sides of the circuit board, if it is on it, it should be normally near where the juice arrives (red wire).
mine was dead once, it was a car type fuse (12V) 10A.
if not balance of the bomb contact (type wd40 or dégrip'oil) on the components and the contacts (switch).

simple battery chargers, with only a transformer and rectifier are not as battery killer: it's payday charger: when the car is completely palt is because we have forgotten the lighthouse, we put this kind charger and a few hours after the car can start, and the alternator finished charging ... these charger without regulator are bad for charging a battery regularly

the charger from the photo may be better since there are electronics ... but we need to know what is the function of this electronic: I've seen with an electronic bazaar not even making the adjustment, but just a reverse protection function

Demonte a little more and put a photo of each face of the circuit

we will start from the catch:

First check if the transformer supplies power.

Branch the thing.

High tech method: voltmeter (in AC mode) on the secondary, then in DC mode after the diodes.
Low tech method: Are there LEDs that light up? Does the transformer emit a buzz?
