Wind power: for or against the wind?

Renewable energies except solar electric or thermal (seeforums dedicated below): wind turbines, energy from the sea, hydraulic and hydroelectricity, biomass, biogas, deep geothermal energy ...

The growing need for gas from the European Union (EU), led by Germany and its smoky "energy turn", whets the appetites of Russia and the United States to become its main suppliers.

This gas will be needed in Europe for its electricity production following the closings (in progress and planned) of coal and nuclear power plants, and also for its heating which will switch even more to gas if electricity becomes too expensive, as in Germany.

This is still around 2,5 times less CO2 per MWh than a lignite plant. But indeed that risks increasing their dependence on gas.

Could that change ??
Net Power, a young American startup, indeed designs power plants that do not emit smoke, because they have the particularity of having no chimney. All the CO2 and all the fumes are reused to produce electricity, which allows them to be truly zero emissions.

A first test unit
They generate electricity with CO2 and smoke, and even better: the efficiency is improved thanks to CO2. This is really very smart, because CO2 becomes a crucial ingredient in the process. For now, they have simply built a small test plant capable of supplying 5.000 homes. It was commissioned near Houston, Texas. And so far, everything is going pretty well. At the end of next year, they should therefore move up a gear, with a real big classic powerhouse.

There is enormous interest in this technology, because it produces electricity at an unbeatable price, which is characteristic of gas or coal power plants. But this time, there will be no more CO2 emissions. A real small revolution, at a time when gas and coal power plants are developing, especially in China, because they remain by far the main source of energy in the world. It is therefore rather reassuring to know that we are working on much cleaner alternatives.

However, they have just decided on a very precise closing schedule, year by year, for a release in 2038. It looks like this:

We'll see. And at what cost. They are already paying twice as much for their current.

In France the state borrows from future generations to produce an artificially low kWh.

Yes, we will see. But usually when they write something in a law, they do it. Maybe in a few years they will change the trajectory, it is quite possible. But it is all the same a law of Cabinet Merckel largely negotiated with the industrialists, I do not see which opposition coalition would come to challenge it in the direction of a relaxation.

If we paid the right price, we would have to increase the wholesale price excluding VAT by € 10 per MWh.

Two ways to calculate this figure:
Tancrede Fulop, analyst at Morningstar, estimated in a note published on April 17 that the loss of cash flow linked to the fall in French nuclear production over 2020-2022 would translate into an increase in net debt of 10,6 billion euros by 2022, assuming no dividends will be paid during this period.
5 billion per year for 500 TWh, that's 10 € per MWh

Another way to calculate: EDF has € 60 billion in debt. If we want to repay over 10 years, that's € 12 per MWh.
In other words, the price of electricity in France must be increased by 25% excluding taxes, transmission and distribution.

But as we do not want to adjust the price to equilibrium for EDF, we pay with our taxes. 4 billion in 2017, and probably 4 billion in 2020 and 2021. Source Usine nouvelle to keep the ratio of net debt to Ebitda below 3.
