World's Largest Wind Turbine Starts Generating Power For First Time

JANUARY 28, 2014

On Tuesday the world's largest and most powerful wind turbine swung into gear at the Danish National Test Center for Large Wind Turbines in Østerild. The prototype V164-8.0 MW wind turbine is 720 feet tall, has 260-foot blades, and can generate 8 megawatts of power - enough to supply electricity for 7,500 average European Households or about 3,000 American Households.
A joint venture between Vestas and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the turbine is slated to go into production next year and was designed to take advantage of the growing offshore wind industry across Europe.
“We have now completed the production, testing, and installation of the V164-8.0 MW as planned, thanks to the team's intense effort during a time when Vestas has reduced its investments and lowered fixed costs,” Anders Vedel, Chief Technology Officer for Vestas , said. “We now look forward to evaluating the turbine's performance on site.”

The 2013 panorama of renewable energies shows for 2013 an increase in installed power of 630 MW for wind power compared to 2012. These figures mark, once again, a slowdown in the rate of growth of these sectors. Legal insecurity around the regulatory framework and the administrative complexity linked to the development of these forms of energy and the network hosting them partly explain this slowdown.

With 8.140 MW in total installed at the end of December 2013, the wind farm produced 15,9 TWh, or 3,3% of electricity consumption.
In comparison, reaching 4.330 MW, the photovoltaic park generated 4,6 TWh and covered 1% of our consumption.

Denmark produced one third of its electricity from the wind in 2013. In no other country has wind's share of annual electricity generation yet topped 30 percent.

But the Danes are not stopping there — they are eyeing a goal of 50 percent wind by 2020, with most of the needed expansion coming from offshore wind farms.

Recent experience shows that Denmark's grid can accommodate this much wind power and more: wind-generated electricity exceeded 100 percent of demand the evening of November 3, 2013.


In Portugal, wind farms produced nearly a quarter of the country's electricity in 2013. The situation was similar in neighboring Spain, where wind power accounted for 21 percent of electricity output, just shy of nuclear power, the leading source at 22 percent.


More than 17 percent of Ireland's power generation in 2013 came from wind farms. Over the course of the year, the wind share frequently went above 50 percent, peaking at 59 percent on September 16th, according to grid operator EirGrid.


And in both Germany and the United Kingdom, countries with a combined population of 145 million, wind contributed nearly 8 percent of electricity generation in 2013. Four states in northern Germany get half or more of their electricity from wind. As impressive as these figures are for Europe's two largest economies, what is really astounding is that each country has enough potential wind generating capacity to be 100 percent wind-powered.

We've already talked about how wind power's costs have dropped 43 percent in just four years, and that competitive power purchase agreements, locked in for 20 years or more, save consumers money, but a new report is making the case for growing wind power even more compelling.

According to a new study, a wind turbine designed to produce electricity for at least 20 years will pay back its production and installation energy costs in just five to eight months - and then keep generating clean energy for the rest of the project's lifespan.

After a thorough life cycle assessment of average-sized, 2 megawatt turbines in the Pacific Northwest, researchers found that after taking into account all the raw materials, transport, manufacturing, installation, maintenance, final disposal related to wind turbines, complete energy payback would occur in a matter of months. This means more than 19 years of a turbine's life (and that is a conservative estimate) can be devoted to one thing: harvesting clean, non-emitting energy from the wind.

This new report pairs well with a comprehensive literature review from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, prepared for the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, on the lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions of different energy sources. Taking into account all lifecycle impacts of an electrical generation facility, wind power has one of the lowest impacts of all zero-emitting resources. This low lifecycle carbon profile is part of what makes wind one of the biggest, fastest, and cheapest ways to cut carbon emissions. In 2013.

EDF EN commissions 3 wind farms in Languedoc-Roussillon

EDF Energies Nouvelles has announced the commissioning of three wind farms, with a total capacity of 34,7 MW, thus confirming its development in the Languedoc-Roussillon region which has favorable natural conditions.

Two new parks are located in the Aude department.

The Conilhac wind farm with 9,2 MW of installed capacity, is made up of four Enercon wind turbines of 2,3 MW each.

Extension of the Luc-sur-Orbieu wind farm (12 MW) built and operated by EDF Energies Nouvelles since 2007, the Plaine de l'Orbieu wind farm has an installed capacity of 11,5 MW with five Enercon wind turbines of 2,3, XNUMX MW.

Located in the commune of Aumelas in the Hérault department, the Hérault Valley wind farm is made up of seven Vestas 2 MW wind turbines with a total installed power of 14 MW. This wind farm corresponds to an extension of the wind farms of Aumelas 1 and 2 of 48 MW of cumulative installed capacity, built in 2005 and 2009 and then operated by the group.

The annual production of the 3 new wind farms generates the equivalent of the electricity consumption of around 43.000 inhabitants.

In terms of wind energy, as of June 30, 2014, EDF Énergies Nouvelles operates in the Languedoc-Roussillon region, 235 MW out of 853 MW of capacity installed in France by the group, or nearly 30% of its national activity in the wind.

Army turnaround

If the exchanges of wind power manufacturers with the army were constructive, the former had reason to fear military rigor. In addition to the rule which prohibits any wind turbine within a radius of 30 km around a military radar, wind projects must obtain prior authorization from the army. "During the summer of 2013, says Sonia Lioret, nearly 2500 megawatts (MW) of projects were rejected overnight by the Defense after they had previously obtained their authorization." A turnaround linked to the army's concern over the growing number of wind turbines in its tactical flight (Voltac) and very low-altitude training (Setba) sectors.

Today around 3500 MW of projects are blocked by the army in its flight zones, according to France Energie Eolienne. In addition, there is a wind potential of more than 2000 MW, which is inaccessible because it is too close to a military radar, and another 3000 MW, excluded by Météo France and civil aviation radars. A total of 8500 MW blocked, more than the current French fleet which displays 8000 MW.

Nice potential market

If cohabitation becomes closer, the 5000 MW blocked by radar could represent a good market for manufacturers working on technologies that minimize radar disturbances linked to wind turbines. Thales is therefore working on the radar side on hardware and software solutions that make it possible to "hide" wind turbines. Onera and Astrium are developing a coating to make wind turbine blades stealthy, like spy planes. Among the wind turbine manufacturers, Vestas appears to be the most advanced. Its first stealth wind turbines developed with the British Qinetiq are being installed on the future largest French wind farm, the Catalan Wind Farm, which EDF Energies Nouvelles is building.

if we put wind turbines everywhere on the whole territory it would produce a general slowing down of the wind at low altitude: the wind would pass higher as it already does above wooded areas or cities which brake the wind

so it doesn't matter if you don't build a wind turbine everywhere, the others will have more wind

as long as the wind turbines are rare as in France we can consider that each wind turbine is independent and does not reduce the wind of the others, but when the energy is more expensive it will grow like mushrooms and we will notice that the energy of the wind of a country is limited: that when a new wind turbine takes the others in one less
