AFP - Oil giant BP said on Wednesday it had reached an amicable settlement of 7,8 billion dollars (5,9 billion euros) with victims of the oil spill caused by the sinking of the platform Deepwater Horizon in 2010 in the Gulf of Mexico.

The agreement, which has yet to be ratified by justice, will repair "the majority of the economic losses of individuals as well as the health damage caused by the accident of the Deepwater Horizon platform and the oil spill", announced the group in a communicated.

BP is not yet at the end of its legal worries, since it still faces complaints from the United States Department of Justice, several states, federal agencies and local communities.

The agreement also does not include complaints from shareholders and companies affected by the moratorium on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico. The final bill for the accident is therefore still far from known.

It's cheap paid, but still a record, the time to start paying for BP .... :P :P :P : Mrgreen: : Mrgreen: : Mrgreen: and good news it's not over yet Yes !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The British oil giant BP will pay the record fine of at least $ 4,5 billion to American and stock market authorities following the April 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

On April 20, 2010, the oil platform of the British group BP, Deepwater Horizon, exploded. Located 80 kilometers off New Orleans in the southern United States, this disaster left 11 dead and spilled hundreds of millions of liters of crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico, resulting in the worst oil spill in the whole of the world. history of the United States. Following the accident, BP entered into a $ 7,8 billion settlement agreement with victims of the oil spill. But this time, it is the American and stock market authorities that have just set the amount of the fine that BP will have to pay: at least $ 4,5 billion.

It is "the highest criminal fine in US history," said US Justice Minister Eric Holder. Quoted by AFP, he also said that BP had "admitted its responsibility in the death of 11 people and the events which led to an unprecedented ecological disaster". The group thus pleaded guilty to 11 counts of manslaughter, two counts of violation of environmental protection laws (two senior BP officials are personally indicted on these two grounds) and one count of obstruction to the environment. Congress (a former leader of the group is accused of "intentionally underestimating" the amount of oil spilled and withholding information from Congress).

As part of this guilty plea, BP agrees to be monitored for four years in matters of security and risk management. “All of us at BP deeply regret the tragic loss of life caused by the Deepwater Horizon accident as well as the impact of the oil spill on the Gulf Coast region,” BP Managing Director Bob Dudley said in a statement. communicated. The group said the $ 4 billion paid to the US Department of Justice would allow federal criminal charges to be dropped. The additional $ 525 million will go to the US Stock Exchange Authority (SEC).

Long-awaited trial to open in February 2013

"The oil spill was catastrophic for the environment, but by hiding its severity, BP also harmed its own shareholders and public investors," said Robert Khuzami, the legal director of the SEC, when the agreement was announced. . The oil group has already set aside this amount and is therefore in a position to quickly pay this record fine. It will be used to restore and preserve the environment, to prevent possible oil spills, to compensate the affected areas and to clean up the coasts. However, this agreement still does not end the civil lawsuits.

"We look forward to the trial" which will open in February 2013, Holder said, and "we intend to prove that BP was grossly responsible in causing the oil spill" and to obtain compensation in civil matters. BP, which has already funded $ 38,1 billion in this case, will spend an additional $ 3,85 billion to cover the payment of the record fine. For its part, the owner of the platform, the Swiss Transocean, is trying to negotiate a $ 1,5 billion amicable agreement to settle lawsuits in the United States.

BP will be monitored (how?) Now and for 4 years. Ha! if we could generalize this method for our bankster, politicards and other companies of international scams etc ... We can always dream : Mrgreen:

Supreme Court forces BP to pay for Deepwater Horizon disaster

The legal battle is intense between the British company BP and the American judicial authorities. The Supreme Court of the United States decided Monday, June 9, that the tanker should continue to pay certain claims for compensation related to the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico. A disaster caused by the explosion of the Deepwater Horizon platform.

I just watched the movie "Deepwater" released in 2016 it relates the first hours of the disaster.

It seemed quite realistic to me (you all know that I am an expert in petroleum extraction : Mrgreen:) but focused only on the disaster and not at all managing the oil spill ...
