According to Bloomberg, the explosion was due to a hydrogen leak. We are trying to stabilize the situation by flooding the reactor with seawater:

We still have some info from Japanese news agencies. Iodine tablets will be distributed to the population. We try to avoid the core melting with a mixture of seawater and boric acid (backup system that exists on our SNA and SNLE).

A TEPCO official has found a way to say that the reactor risks being shut down for 1 year . Maybe to minimize the event.
