Microbacterium sp.A9, bacteria against radioactivity

Fight against radioactivity pollution with bacteria very tolerant to radioactivity? We already talked about this track here or there on the forums... here are some details:

A bacterium from contaminated Chernobyl soils has the ability to “swallow” uranium by mineralizing it. A new track for decontamination.

It all started in 2008, when researchers from CEA-IBEB and CNRS, guided by their colleagues from IRSN1 and UIAR2, took samples of contaminated soil in the Chernobyl exclusion zone.

"Our role was to help IRSN take the living compartment into account in their modeling in order to predict the behavior and migration of radionuclides in soils," says Virginie Chapon, biologist at CEA-IBEB. The soil is a fantastic reservoir of bacteria and these are capable of trapping or accelerating the migration of radionuclides. "

Researchers bring a plethora of bacteria back into their test tubes, including one that catches their eye. Called Microbacterium sp.A9, it tolerates high uranium concentrations
