Record level for Russian gas exports to Europe in 2017

04/01/2018

Exports of Russian gas to Europe reached a record level in 2017: 193,9 billion cubic meters, an increase of 8,1%, reveals the Financial Times. The Russian giant Gazprom, which holds a monopoly on pipelines for the export of Russian gas, supplies 40% of the gas consumed by Europe. "This new export record for the second year in a row demonstrates, on the one hand, the growing demand from European countries for Russian gas and, on the other hand, the reliability of its deliveries," said Alexey Miller, General Manager of Gazprom Group. . The newspaper recalls that in order to protect its share of the European market, Gazprom was forced to lower its prices after EU member states increased their purchases of gas from the United States, Qatar and the United States. other producing countries.

Cold wave: record Russian gas exports to Europe

AFP published on Feb 27. 2018

The cold comes from the East, the gas too: the Russian giant Gazprom announced Tuesday to have beaten for six days in a row gas export records to Europe, swept in recent days by freezing cold from Siberia.

"Gazprom continues to set absolute records in daily volume of gas exports" to countries outside the former USSR, namely Europe and Turkey, the public group announced in a statement. "A new historic record of 666,8 million cubic meters was broken on February 26, for the sixth time in six days," he added.

From the Baltic to the Mediterranean, Europe has been gripped for several days by freezing cold that has claimed twenty lives. This cold wave was nicknamed "The Beast from the East", "The Siberian Bear" or even the "Moscow-Paris" by the European media. Gazprom's exports to Europe - which traditionally rise when winters are cold - have increased by more than 30% in three years, according to the group, which covers more than a third of the European continent's consumption.

In 2017, the gas giant had exported a record volume to Europe and Turkey of 194,4 billion cubic meters of gas. Today, the group is seeking to develop new pipelines, with the capital support of major European groups, to maintain its market share, although the EU is dragging its heels.

Antitrust: Gazprom to escape EU fine, worries PGNiG Polish

AFP published the 04 May 2018

The Polish public gas company PGNiG was alarmed Friday to see Gazprom evade a fine from Brussels, which has been investigating for seven years against the Russian giant for abuse of dominant position in eight countries of the EU.

"Do not let Gazprom get away with abusing the market. The European Commission is letting the Russian giant escape without a fine," wrote PGNiG boss Piotr Wozniak in a column on the European site on Friday of Politico. Mr Wozniak said he was "disappointed and embarrassed" after seeing a confidential version of a Commission document, according to which the EU executive was "on the verge of not imposing any fines on Gazprom".

After going on the offensive in April 2015 accusing Gazprom of abuse of dominant position in several markets in Central and Eastern Europe, the Commission, guardian of competition in the EU, said it was satisfied in March 2017 commitments proposed by Gazprom, controlled by the Russian state. She then invited all Gazprom's customers and all stakeholders in the case to comment on these commitments. She then returned to the Russian gas company to dispel the latest issues raised.

According to a source familiar with the matter, the European executive and Gazprom would indeed be close to announcing an amicable agreement. Comparing the attitude of the European Commission vis-à-vis the American giants, like Apple and Google, financially sanctioned by Brussels, the CEO of PGNiG protests against the treatment of Gazprom by the Commission which has opted for "forgiveness".

"I do not envy the political pressure endured by the European Commissioner for Competition, Margrethe Vestager, from member countries and commissioners who have opted for a compromise with Gazprom," he wrote. Asked by AFP on this forum, a spokesperson for the Commission, Ricardo Cardoso, simply assured that "the antitrust investigation on Gazprom continues".

Russian Gazprom loses leading position in the ranking of the world's largest energy companies 250

Ecofin 24 September 2018 Agency

In a study published last week, the valuation firm S&P Global Platts indicated that Gazprom is no longer the number one energy company in the world. The Russian limited company specializing in the production of natural gas was outclassed by the American oil company Exxon Mobil.

Gazprom dropped to the 17th place ranking that lists 250 companies in total.

It must be said that Exxon Mobil had been dethroned by Gazprom for a year. Until 2016, Exxon Mobil had spent 12 consecutive years at the top of this ranking.

The study also indicates that the world's largest oil and gas companies have benefited from a jump in world crude prices over the past year. This improvement in oil prices has contributed to increased drilling, investment, pipeline construction and mergers and acquisitions.

Russian gas exports to Europe to a new record in 2018

AFP 28 December 2018

Russian gas exports to Europe reached a new record in 2018 despite diplomatic tensions and the European Union's (EU) willingness to reduce its dependence on Russia, the Russian group Gazprom said on Friday.

Gazprom, which holds a monopoly on gas pipeline exports, has sold 201 billion cubic meters of gas in the Europe and Turkey region over the past year, about 3,5% more than in 2017, Russian agencies said to its director General Alexei Miller.

These exports account for the largest part of sales to Europe, another part, open to competition, being realized by liquefied natural gas.

The steady increase in European demand for Russian gas is put forward by Russia to defend its new gas pipeline projects, via Turkey or the Baltic, despite the reluctance of the European Union which has for years said to want to diversify its sources supply.

Gazprom, heir to the Soviet Gas Ministry, covers about a third of European consumption.

The group's total gas production, which had reached its lowest levels a few years ago since the fall of the USSR against a backdrop of increased competition, has recovered from more than 5% in 2018, to 497,6 billion in m3 Miller said.

Gazprom: net profit doubled in 2018 to 20,2 bn EUR

AFP published the 29 Apr 2019

Russian giant Gazprom announced Monday that it has doubled its net profit in 2018 compared to the previous year, driven in particular by a record increase in volumes and prices of gas sold to Europe.

According to the results released on Monday, the group controlled by the Russian state has reported a net profit of 1.456 billion rubles (20,2 billion euros at current rate) in 2018 against 714 billion rubles in 2017.

Its operating profit has also more than doubled over a year to 1.903 billion rubles (26,4 billion euros) and its turnover is up by 26% over one year to 8.224 billion rubles (113,9 billion euros).

In 2018, the improvement in the results of the successor of the Soviet Ministry of Gas results in particular from a significant increase in the volumes and prices of gas sold.

Sales of gas to Europe and Turkey, which have always yielded most of its profits, reached a record level of 201 billion cubic meters (against 194,4 billion in 2017), despite geopolitical tensions and calls from the European Union for diversification of sources of supply.

Gas prices in rubles jumped by 33% over the year, while dollar prices rose by 23%.

Gazprom's market share has tended to increase in recent years in Europe, reaching about one-third of total consumption, despite tensions with the European Union that says it wants to reduce its reliance on Russian gas.

In total, its gas sales increased in volume by 2,7% over one year to 521,1 billion cubic meters of gas.

Its exports to the countries of the former USSR increased by 8,9%, and the volume of gas sold in the internal market of 4,3%.

Gazprom announces a sharp increase in its net profit in the first half

AFP published on August 29, 2019

The Russian giant Gazprom announced Thursday a 32,4% increase in its net profit in the first half of the year, thanks to an increase in revenue from gas sales.

According to the results published on Thursday, the group controlled by the Russian state generated a net profit of 878,6 billion rubles in the first half of 2019 (11,9 billion euros at the current rate), against 663,5 billion rubles. over the same period in 2018.

Its operating profit for its part decreased by 11,2% year on year to 780,9 billion rubles, and its turnover rose slightly by 2,6% year on year to 4.076 billion rubles. Up quarterly, net profit increased 17,6% year on year to 319,1 billion rubles.

Gazprom supplies a third of the gas consumed in Europe, and if its market share has tended to increase in recent years, the Russian group is now strongly challenged by liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Gas volumes sold to Europe were down 8,2% in the second half of the year compared to 2018 - a record year - but this was offset by an increase in gas prices, especially in rubles .

Poles are fed up with Russian gas:

Poland to end large gas contract with Russia in 2022

AFP released the 15 Nov 2019

The Polish national gas group PGNiG said Friday that it would not extend beyond 2022 its long-term gas contract with Gazprom, following the successful diversification of energy sources, according to a statement from the Polish group.

The PGNiG transmitted to the Russian group "the declaration of intention to terminate the execution of the gas purchase-sale contract to the Republic of Poland concluded on September 25, 1996 (the Yamal contract) on December 31, 2022", according to his press release.

The Polish authorities have already announced in recent years that they will not extend this contract which, they say, makes Poland dependent on Russia for energy and which sets gas prices too high compared to those in the market.

According to the PGNiG, the diversification of energy sources undertaken in recent years by Poland allows "to ensure the energy security of the country and to put an end to the Yamal contract".

Two-thirds of the gas consumed in Poland, or around 10 billion cubic meters, is currently delivered by Russia under this contract.

To diversify its supply, Poland has built in recent years a gas terminal on the Baltic with a capacity of 5 billion cubic meters per year and signed long-term LNG delivery contracts, notably with the United States. .

Polish companies have also acquired several gas fields in the North Sea and Warsaw has signed an agreement with Denmark on the construction of a gas pipeline under the Baltic Sea (Baltic pipe) to ensure the delivery of this gas.

Several interconnections have also been built or are planned with neighboring countries.

In the same vein, Warsaw is firmly opposed to the project of the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline bringing Russian gas to Europe via the Baltic Sea and bypassing Ukraine and Poland. She sees it as a potential means of "political blackmail" on the part of Moscow.
