Increase the life of batteries

by Christophe » 04/01/07, 15:40

Do you know methods to optimize the lifespan of small on-board electronic batteries (GSM, Laptops, Palm, digital photo ...)?

The fact is that the price of the replacement battery is such that changing it means changing the whole device in many cases :(

Overconsumption and overpollution for a simple question of battery hence this question: are there "tips" to boost the life of your battery? May this be in terms of capacity or number of charge cycles possible?

We know (almost) all that you have to discharge as much as possible before recharging in order to avoid the memory effects most batteries (except on the most modern style lithium-ion polymers which have no memory effect I think).

See wiki: http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Effet_m%C3%A9moire

Recover a battery that has a memory effect [edit]

By connecting a battery affected by the problem to an appropriate discharge system (discharger), intended to empty it up to the minimum threshold of 1V / element, the part of the capacity which has a “bad” nominal voltage, will be restored.

It will then be possible to recharge the battery which will regain a large part of its performance.

These operations must not be carried out without suitable equipment or precautions. All electric accumulators are dangerous: they can heat up, catch fire, or even explode, and cause serious personal injury.

Well, looking for it, I came across it:

http://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium-io ... o.2FLi-ion

Extend the life of a Li-ion (lithium-ion) battery

* Do not make a deep discharge
* Do not store batteries for too long without using them
* Store the battery at room temperature (many manufacturers store the batteries at 15 ° C)
* Store the battery at around 40% charge
* Do not fully charge the battery before storing it
* Do not completely discharge the battery before storing it
* Do not stock spare batteries
* When buying the battery, check the date of manufacture, its wear begins when it leaves the factory.

So there should not be a universal miracle method: what is good for one seems bad for others ...

I like the 40% charge thing ... it must not be very easy to obtain for the common man I am ... : Shock:

For the Palm I don't know, but for the APN, Mobaïle and Laptops, the spare batteries (sold on sites like AboutBatterie.com for example) are an interesting alternative economically, even if they are not as efficient as the batteries original (test on a Li-Ion from SONY APN, for two years).

A good discharge, 1 time every 2 months ...

by belze1 » 05/01/07, 12:23

Li-ion batteries have no memory effect?
Here is a little experiment that I tried on 24/12;
My mobile phone is completely discharged (more than
sleep mode possible), I stuck a firefly after
a garland (it's vintage) between the battery and
the body of the laptop; it stayed on for one
beautiful shine for about 4 hours.
After recharging the phone, I noticed a time of use
> 40% (about the same usage as usual).
After complete discharge (2nd time), I repositioned the firefly
and it only remained bright for 4 minutes.
Interesting isn't it?

Uh, I don't quite understand the purpose of your manipulation ... especially the "I repositioned the firefly and it only stayed bright for 4 minutes."

What do you want to show? This:

Extend the life of a Li-ion (lithium-ion) battery

* Do not make a deep discharge

Yes it is possible but the other pb with the mobaïle (as you say it so well) is their ridiculous cost (in France) and their very fast technological evolution ... which "oblige" a large part of the population to change very frequently.

In Belgium, laptops are sold "at the right price", from 100 € (for the base model from France 5 years ago) to 500 € (see more for the top of the range but I'm not a specialist either).

I think that greatly reduces the overconsumption of this kind of material ...

Do you really believe that a mobail is worth 100 € :?:

When it leaves the factory in China for less than 3 €, count the port, the taxes, the price which doubles at each intermediary ... Ah yes 100 € : Lol:

normal use of a mobile for several months: charging, discharging ...
when the mobile was completely discharged (start of the experiment),
the test light remained on for 4 hours: the battery was not
completely empty.
after full recharge and discharge (over several days),
when the test light was reconnected, it remained on for only 4 minutes: the battery
was practically empty.
Before the experiment, there was an accumulation of residual "charges"
not usable by mobile; isn't this the memory effect?
The discharge by the firefly made it possible to eliminate these residual "charges" it seems to me

yes, there is a very weak memory effect when you never let the battery drain, but which ends up being annoying because it is cumulative. do 2-3 deep discharges followed by knock loads roughly restore normal characteristics.
However, the battery doesn't really like it, and if you do it all the time it ages prematurely.

I now believe that all mobiles have li-ion or li-po batteries. The advantage is that the weight / size / power ratio is excellent, and that there is no (or very very little?) Effect even with. You can easily recharge even if the battery is slightly discharged.

On the other hand their big defect is that they wear themselves out, whether they are used or not. After 3 years they have lost a large percentage of their capacity (I no longer have the figure in mind).

However what you did belze1 it's not good at all: a li-ion or li-po element must not go below a threshold of 3V per element, it destroys it.
The electronics of the mobile manage the charge / discharge of the battery and make it possible never to exceed this threshold of discharge.

By connecting your firefly bulb you made a deep discharge of your battery, it did not make him too happy in my opinion :?
I even think it can be dangerous! Be careful the li-ion and li-po are very likely if we exceed the limits, risk of explosions !!

You haven't heard feedback from laptop manufacturers, with some models that caught fire ...:P
