Tests: T5 fluorescent tube and ballast

by gregdu13250 » 03/04/10, 16:56

Hi everybody,

I don't like my electronic ballasts at all ...

The T5 fluorescent tube is the new generation tube. We find more and more including for individuals

So I did 4 tests

The first, a T5 8w connected to an 8w ferro-magnetic ballast
The second, a T5 8w connected to an 8w electronic ballast
The third, an 8w T18 connected to an 18w 12v electronic ballast
The fourth, a T8 connected to a 20w ferro-magnetic ballast

It turns out that my 2 electronic ballasts blacken the tubes over the entire length

We observe the same phenomenon with the T8,

I can tell you that it shows well on the mixed support that I made (that of electronic left, that of ferro magnetic right)

The yield of the one on the left has decreased, it lights up less strongly

After how long (in lighting hours)?
How much ignition per day on average?
are electronic ballasts hot cathode or cold cathode type?

The magnetic ferro runs 7h / day
Electronics rotate 4 to 5 hours per day

Unfortunately at low power it is rare to find hot cathodes but the electrodes have not yet started to bcp blacken, they are not blue at startup (not like that of BAES).

But I see the interest of the T5 limited anyway because according to the manufacturers these have a lifespan divided by 2 compared to the T8. I have already changed T1 once after 5 years while the T3 is still the same for years
