#Facebookdown: big "blackout" of Facebook network sites on October 4, 2021

Hi-tech electronic and computer equipment and Internet. Better use of electricity, help with the work and specifications, equipment selection. Presentations fixtures and plans. Waves and electromagnetic pollution.

Sorry, it's in 2 days: https://www.zdnet.fr/actualites/ovh-est ... 930649.htm

OVHcloud is on the ground two days before going public

Technology: "504 Gateway Time-out. Site and mail out". Here is the message that OVH customers are reading in a very desperate way this morning. The host's customers report a total shutdown of services: databases, dedicated servers, websites.

Broken emails are the worst part: because generally the sender does not even have a response of non-deliverability!

Klaba is more honest than Zuckerberg, he admits to massive attacks:

Octave Klaba @olesovhcom

In recent days, the intensity of DDoS attacks has increased significantly. We have decided to increase our DDoS processing capacity by adding new infrastructures in our DC VH (US-EST). A bad configuration of the router caused the failure of the network.

I'll put it back to you:

With the GDPR (which I had to implement here in November 2020...you know the boring cookie consent popup...) Facebook could be down permanently in Europe...and honestly it may not be a bad thing !

Facebook: The excesses on personal data jeopardize its economic model

The social media giant is not serene. The stock price of the parent company fell after the presentation of mixed results. In question, the access more and more difficult to the personal data of the users, real fuel of the business model of the firm, following in particular a decision of Apple. Facebook is in fact the subject of keen attention from regulators, particularly in Europe where its hegemony is increasingly discussed.

The stock market collapse of Mark Zuckerberg's empire is spectacular. Shortly after the announcement of the annual results of the group newly baptized "Meta", its capitalization lost more than 200 billion dollars in one day. A record! Facebook still reaps profits, but the Californian group seems to have fallen on a bone. One of the reasons for its setbacks is indeed a kind of pendulum swing from the exploitation of personal data, which is the foundation of its business model.

"There is a clear trend towards reducing the data available to offer personalized advertising," said Mark Zuckerberg, quoted by the Financial Times, in front of analysts. Facebook derives its revenue from the generation of online advertising, the company being even one of the largest global players behind Google. But ramparts against the rampant use of user data are beginning to rise. And, surprise, it is Apple, another member of Gafa, who seems to have dealt the hardest blow. In the spring of 2021, Apple tightened its terms of use and now offers its customers the option of choosing whether or not they want an application to use their personal data.
Consumers are interested in the use of their data

In an advertisement for the iPhone in May 2021, Apple thus staged a consumer pursued in each of his daily purchases by a horde of curious people. The choice to prohibit advertising tracking on your smartphone made them all disappear. A fatal choice for Facebook, whose advertising model is based on this ability to understand the consumption habits of its users by tracing their internet browsing. According to the social network, this decision by Apple would have prevented nearly $10 billion in potential revenue.

Consumers are increasingly interested in how their data is used. The revelations of a former Facebook employee before the US Senate thus caused a scandal, prompting the US legislator to think about new regulations. The whistleblower assured that the social network made its economic interest take precedence over the protection of user data and their mental health. For the first time, Facebook has thus recorded a decline in the number of daily users, down to 1,929 billion in the last quarter of 2021, against 1,930 in the previous quarter. A tiny drop, but a huge signal.

In Europe, Mark Zuckerberg's firm is also in the sights of public authorities. "Technological sovereignty is an absolute key to European sovereignty. Behind this requirement of sovereignty, there is a very simple question: who controls?", insists Bruno Le Maire, the Minister of the Economy, at the opening of the conference " Building Europe's Digital Sovereignty". The Minister of the Economy pleads for a European model, in which digital platforms are controlled by citizens.
Two European regulations

Two European regulations are thus being drafted and have been placed on the agenda of the French Presidency of the European Union (PFUE). These are the Digital Market Act (DMA) which aims to avoid the monopoly positions of the digital giants, and the Digital Service Act (DSA) which aims to better control the content distributed on these platforms. Through these projects, the European authorities seek to bring out local competitors of Facebook and others, in particular so that the personal data of Europeans is processed on site.

These attacks on its model make Facebook more feverish. A 2020 decision by the Court of Justice of the European Union, seized by the NGO Noyb (None of your business), invalidated the Privacy Shield which allowed it to transfer European data to its American servers. In a document for the American financial policeman, the firm wonders if it will be able to continue to operate its social networks in Europe.
