Portable: good use of batteries / service life

How to preserve your laptop battery?

Our laptops or phones see their autonomy decrease during their life. How many terminals will not boot if they are not connected to power? Let's see how to avoid battery problems.

This is all the more important as more and more manufacturers have the practice, dishonest limit in our opinion, to prevent the user changes his own battery, and therefore require in case of problems at a very expensive return service ..

Never empty your battery completely

This is the main problem. Born from the fact that a battery generation passed (nickel and lead), it was actually not an evil. But today, with our Lithium Ion batteries, it is absolutely necessary to avoid it. Dropping your battery below the 10% bar is a definite risk, dropping it to zero can result in a decrease of 20% of its capacity. And even worse, prevent recharging the battery. In fact, emptying it completely can cause chemical damage, internal security prevents reloading to avoid more accidents.

A security exists on the majority of the operating systems allowing to extinguish the laptop if the battery level gets dangerously close to 5 to 10%. On Windows, it is found in Control Panel / Power Options.
On the other hand, when your battery arrives under the 20% bar, it is important, once in a while, once a month is a recommended rhythm, to let it recharge quietly and without interruption to the maximum. This is called a full charge cycle.

Remember, when you store a battery for a while without using it, charge it to 40%. True, lithium batteries really do not discharge much if they are inactive, but 40% remains a reasonable security. Storing it in full can be harmful (pressure of the internal tension which increases wear). 40% is the right compromise.

Remember: it takes a complete and uninterrupted charging cycle per month to maintain its battery

Batteries degrade with time

It is inexorable and inevitable, we can only slow down the process. Little trick: when you buy a mobile device, take a look (if possible) on the date of manufacture of the battery, and comparable model, choose the one with the most recent battery!

An Ion accumulator, depending on its quality, has a life expectancy of between 500 and 1000 charge cycles.

Should you disconnect the battery when you leave your mobile phone on AC power?

We asked Nathalie Halloche, MSI Notebook Manager, who kindly replied:
"You should know that the lithium-ion battery has no memory. You would think that the battery could suffer from a voltage depression because it remains constantly charged if the computer is connected to the mains. However, this This is not the case with lithium-ion batteries, a battery that MSI uses for its notebooks. When recharging, the power supply gives part of the energy to the batteries and another for the operation of the computer Finally, once the batteries are fully recharged, the electrical circuit cuts off the current transmitted to them in order to no longer receive electricity and thus prevent any overcharging.

There is no fear with small recharges, quite the contrary. On average, a Li-ion battery lives between 500 and 1 charge cycles. When the computer is connected to the mains, recharging does not take place continuously. We wait for the battery to lose 000% of its charge before recharging it by 10%. It takes 10 recharges to complete a complete cycle. "

So that's not the problem. If many sedentary users of a laptop see the state of their battery deteriorate in a few months, it is especially that they do not practice a complete charging cycle, cf. upper.

Note also that MacBook users can not remove their battery in case of sedentary use: the "unibody" shells of recent models prevent them; and for older models, the laptop automatically idles if the battery is removed.

The batteries are fragile

We must not dramatize, but they are still small explosive devices. And which do not withstand high temperatures. At 40 ° C, a battery may be damaged and at 80 ° it may even explode. In 2006 (Nokia phones) and 2008 (Sony and Apple laptops), two series of batteries that presented risks of overheating were recalled. And some devices caught fire, see have exploded. When you charge your phone, check at least once that your battery does not become abnormally hot and if necessary, look on the Internet if its serial number has not been recalled by the manufacturer.

Note in case there is no fun opening the batteries, the risk of chemical poisoning being important. It is for the same reason also that we should not put its batteries in the trash, but carry them to recycle, in recycling bins that are easily found (hypermarkets, garbage dumps ...)

Understand his battery

To describe a battery, a unit of measurement is often used: milliampere per hour: mAh. This describes the amount of electricity contained, so an important element to assess autonomy, mainly in the case of mobile phones.
It is important to know the voltage, for example 16,6 volts (for a 4 battery cells to 4,2 volts the cell), especially if you want to use a different charger than the one sold with the device. Check that this new charger has a voltage of 2 or 3 volts higher than that of the battery, about 20 volts for the example mentioned above.

By multiplying the voltage (in volts) by the electrical quantity (in ampere), we find the energy capacity of the battery, in Watt hour.
