What computer equipment do you use?

by GuyGadeboisTheBack » 08/04/21, 16:06

Out of curiosity, what computer equipment do you use?
Keyboard, mouse, screen, PC (Processor, video card, motherboard, memory, etc.)?
You can talk about the good and bad things you find in them, it can be instructive for others.

Hi Guy!

For me, my personal PC and builds partially second-hand equipment (I have fully assembled my PCs since 1998):
- Used CM + Intel 3570K processor (too expensive in new)
- Very silent fan unit bought new
- 8gb of new fast DDR3 2400 RAM
- Server box (ugly but large, strong and silent) to collect from a client who was going to throw it away
- Keyboard and mouse bought in a discount store or 50% promo
- RX580 4GB graphics card to play a little (very little indeed), bought in great promo
- SSD 500go (new and recent) + HDD 2TB 5400 turns (new but old)
- 32 inch screen 2500x1440 VA panel (super contrast) bought 99 € in super-sale: Nickel for movies / games / work (I still have a 27 inch in repair)

Conclusion: Largely sufficient for my personal needs, which is the goal!

I used to replace one or two elements every 2 years to boost the too slow part that slowed the whole too much.
Since I have a powerful laptop and I am telecommuting, I no longer invest in my personal PC.

For someone looking to have a new config:
- For energy saving and basic work: Take a laptop PC with at least: SSD, 8GB RAM, 15 '' 6 FHD screen, Intel core i3 minimum or AMD 4000 or 5000
- Otherwise gamer config according to the budget (gamer PCs are generally very powerful)

Tips: Do not skimp on the amount of RAM (8 GB mini) and the quality of the screen (see for an external screen if you buy a laptop)

OS:
- For all: Windows 10 64 bits works very well (never install in 32 bits because the hardware manufacturers no longer release the drivers in 32 bits)
- For computer geeks or recycling an old machine with little power: Linux (find a free distribution that best suits your needs)

Printer: HP color laser bought on sale!
Why ? The answers :
- the ink does not dry and does not flow
- Ink cost much lower than inkjet (buy in Germany)
- Color laser = possibility of printing in very good quality in shades of gray (= black and white photos)
- Allows printing of printed circuits correctly on a transparent plastic support for exposure.

IN ALL CASES :
Do not forget a good external HDD to make VERY regular backups of your personal data, photos, ... via free synchronization software (SyncBack Free).
My cousin lost all the photos from 0 to 2 years old of her 1st child because she hadn't made a backup and her PC got a virus!

IMPORTANT: The external HDD must be turned off when not in use, to prevent a virus from attacking it too!

For the Apple world, you refer to other people who are more fortunate or know better the subject!

LENOVO laptop bought from memory around 250 € 3 years ago, the previous one (COMPAQ) being 10 years old and still working but under VISTA, it was getting swelling.
No worries about my daily activities.
But same concerns as Macro vis-à-vis security ....
