GREEN ALGAE: THE SCOURGE OF BRITTANY IS BACK
The 11 / 08 / 2017
Experts fear the worst green tide of the decade for this summer. New € 55,5 million battle plan to curb proliferation.
Last April, the Bretons understood that they were going to have to get back to work seriously to clean their beaches: the level of green algae was the highest that we have ever seen at this time of year ... Worse than the dark years, or rather green, of 2008 and 2009. "By flying over the berries, we measured five times more green algae than the average since 2002", explains Sylvain Ballu, who studies the evolution of these green tides at Center for the study and valuation of algae (Ceva) in Pleubian.
Reason? The winter was calm: few storms, so few big waves to clean up the algae agglutinated the previous year. Add to that the good weather and a higher water temperature in early spring ... The cocktail is perfect for promoting the concentration of nitrates. These nitrogenous derivatives present in water, which come from intensive spreading resulting from the excrement of pigs and farmed poultry, make proliferate the green algae become for several decades the Breton scourge par excellence. Tens of thousands of tonnes of algae will have to be removed in the coming weeks.
"Green algae concern less than 5% of the 2.700 kilometers of coastline", relativizes Thierry Burlot, vice-president of the regional council of Brittany in charge of the environment. No doubt, but for the eight bays in the region concerned - from Saint-Brieuc to Concarneau via Lannion and Douarnenez - the challenge is not small. As the water stagnates in the bays, the waves do not chase the "salad", which rots. Fresh, seaweed is unpleasant but it is not dangerous. On the other hand, when they rot in the sun, they become poisonous and strandings are suspected of constituting a mortal danger to humans.
