A microcontroller is not that complicated for amateur specialists. And I do not see in model making the management of the on-board battery on a reduced model, it is not useful, there can only be an indicator to land (helicopter) before the complete discharge (and still there are times at the transmitter level to do so). For the price question, considering the price of a Brushless motor controller for example in the 100 € and more, a powerful motor is even more ... A circuit based on PIC (microcontroller, ex simple a 16F84 is worth 5 €) is much more affordable, but we have to do some development.
But in fact the project seems too complicated especially if you start from 0 or if you do not have enough skills and technical means.
Personally as I said for the other project I would not venture into this adventure. We should define the expectations well ....

Looking back I would see the limit for a model reduced mounting with a heat engine in permanent engagement with an electric motor. At low speed the electric motor provides the possibility of strong accelerations and at high speed it is the engine in its good range of use that provides the largest and can recharge eg supercapacitors (instead of batteries) for the next acceleration. The engine brake would also be electric. It's a bit like the prototype mount of a NewBeetle that has dragster accelerations (electric motor) and a small heat engine to keep the distance ....
Supercapacitors have the ability to provide very large currents for quite a short time (better than batteries) and a very good life (according to the manufacturer!?). But you still have to manage all that!
