Increased desertification in southern Romania
By Ana-Maria Roșca | Published on 17/04/2018
Digi24 reported the amplification of the desertification process in recent years, in southern Romania, in the department of Dolj, due to the reduction of the wooded area in the region and to the rise in temperatures.
The affected area now covers 100.000 hectares and lies between Craiova, Calafat and Corabia. The place is nicknamed "the Sahara of Oltenia", it is also known for its sandy soils and for the region of Dabuleni, famous for the cultivation of watermelons.
In 1970, forests, which play an important role in reducing the effects of aridity, covered 12% of the surface of Dolj, today this surface is reduced to 7%.
Before 1989, an irrigation system was installed between Sadova and Corabia, to help during periods of drought; after the revolution, these installations were destroyed, considerably aggravating the aridity of the region.
According to Digi24, farmers have adapted to sandy soils, growing sweet potatoes or peanuts. “The land is sandy in Dabuleni and we will never have crops rich in corn or wheat. We have to manage, because the irrigation system will never be reinstalled. Before the revolution, the area was fully irrigated, ”said one farmer.
At the end of last year, volunteers planted more than 5.000 acacias in the department of Dolj, but specialists say more needs to be done to combat desertification.

Combating desertification

Desertification affects many countries including Romania. The phenomenon is noted in particular in the south of the Romanian territory and in Dobrodgea. The sandy soil of Romania gains a thousand hectares every year.

June 17 was the World Day to Combat Desertification and Drought, a special time to remind us that pollution, climate change, extreme weather phenomena inevitably lead to deforestation, destruction of crops and ultimately , desertification. This phenomenon is already affecting part of our continent, including Romania, in particular the south of the country, namely the Danube basin and the Dobroudja region.
