Global warming will cost us dear

An interministerial group of experts evaluated the bill of climate change in France and its impact. The bill could be several billion euros a year.
The report submitted yesterday to the Minister of Sustainable Development, Jean-Louis Borloo, by the National Observatory on the effects of global warming (Onerc), is alarming.

Working from two scenarios on climate change (a rather pessimistic first and a second optimist), experts agree that climate change is a reality today and that these consequences will have a significant impact on our climate change. environment and our way of life. They recommend the establishment of a "learning vulnerability".

Water resources

A deficit of two billion cubic meters per year for the needs of agriculture, industry and drinking water supply would be observed towards 2050. The areas already affected today by water deficits will be the most affected.

Agriculture

Global warming is expected to increase yields to 2100, including wheat. But the vagaries of climate and the multiplication of heat waves like that of 2003 could represent a cost of 300 million euros per year for a crop such as wheat, if we do not adapt by then.

Natural risks

The shrinkage-swelling of clays (contraction of the soil due to drought) could damage buildings (cracks) up to a billion euros per year in 2100. This cost could be multiplied by four to five, if we continue to urbanize the areas at risk.

Rising waters on the coast could affect several hundred thousand people. The coastal risk for the western regions (Brittany, Pays de la Loire, Normandy) is classified at the high level.

For the Languedoc-Roussillon region alone, 140 000 homes (against 15 000 today) and 10 000 companies are located in an area affected by a risk of permanent submersion or erosion by 2100.

For this region alone, the cost could be several tens of billions of euros.

Tourism

The warming will lead to a deterioration of the climatic comfort in summer in the whole country. A significant fall in summer sales is expected on the 2100 horizon. In the Alps, the decrease in the snowpack will reduce the reliability of the snow.

National plan

A national plan must be developed by 2011 to point out adaptation measures that can limit the negative impacts of global warming.
