The reassuring WHO speech on the risks of using mobile phones is being shaken by a new Israeli study, partly funded by the UN organization. The radiation emitted by the devices would clearly increase the risk of cancer of the parotid glands, located near the ear.
Dr. Sigal Sadetski and colleagues at the Tel Hashomer Medical Center in Tel Aviv, Israel, investigated 402 benign tumors of the parotid gland, and 58 malignancies diagnosed in Israeli adults. When asked about their telephone habits, they saw their results compared to those of healthy people.
Unambiguously none, the authors note "a causal link between the use of cell phones and the development of parotid gland tumors". And the longer the use of the phone, the greater the danger seems important. "The risk is (so) increased by 50% in people who use their laptops for more than 22 hours a month," the authors continue. Another point of importance is that exposure is more dangerous in rural areas (where transmitters are more powerful) than in urban areas.
This is an important step that has just been taken. Because until now, the contradictory conclusions on the possible dangers of the electromagnetic fields were legion. More than 600 studies have indeed already been done on the subject ... the majority financed by the operators themselves! For Dr. Sadetzki, "we need to both encourage people to use hands-free kits more systematically, and re-evaluate mobile phone standards. New technology should (indeed) be rapidly developed to reduce the risk of radiation-related tumors. "
