The interesting point of view of Alain Pavé, a researcher, on the subject of biodiversity and the extinction of species. In any case, I agree with him on his criticism of the ambient catastrophism which entertains us with the understanding of the phenomena in progress, whether we are talking about biodiversity, global warming ...
Is the catastrophic language on biodiversity adapted to scientific language? I'm not sure of it. Fear sells well.

To make the counterpart, a video of an ecologist with an opinion different from that of Alain Pavé, on the question:

a language is never scientific, even with terms of its own order. Science, by definition, is only an attempt, more or less credible, to explain phenomena later. If there is global warming, for example, each "specialist" tries to provide his analysis, often in contradiction with other specialists, which does not advance us either. There remain the facts which actually show that this warming is indeed present whatever the cause. Is it catastrophism to consider the most serious form estimated or to have an optimistic speech (held for decades) because, naturally, we prefer the good news rather than the bad. Now that fear sells well, it is not sure that it sells better than a reassuring speech, while everything collapses around you.
You probably know the story of the guy who falls from the 42 floor of a skyscraper and every floor past says: "So far everything is fine!" but all we know in advance that what matters is after the passage of the 1st floor. :(

I think the reluctance of the first responder (Alain Pave) are rather methodological and that he takes refuge in a fairly comfortable scientific posture (scientist!) as an observer not directly concerned. Evidenced by his reflection that it is only after a very long time that we can judge the relevance of this "new extinction", that is to say much too late to draw any. practical teaching ... :frown:

What say Janic is very fair: the reassuring discourse is the hyperdominant model and catastrophism seems to me more like a side and double phenomenon. On the one hand, it expresses doubts about the validity of the model by crystallizing them into a science (since we understand is that we control!), On the other hand it serves as the basis for new opportunities for the accumulation of abstract value.

Jean-Marc Jancovici:
"In an ocean that is warming and becoming acidic, organic production will unfortunately decrease, and animal biomass (and therefore fish) decrease, not to mention overfishing.
This is one of the unsavory conclusions found in the last IPCC report on the ocean and the cryosphere (available on http://www.ipcc.ch/).
Not sure that Quantitative Easing, the extension of working hours before retirement or 5G are an appropriate response to this problem! "
It is not about to reverse and it has already started. The sixth extinction is well underway and for a long time.

"Jean-Marc-jancovici-est-il-un-con?", That is the question laid in the other thread.

When I read these prophecies as peremptory as they are inconsistent, in the Nostradamus, when our climatic sciences, earth sciences, biology are quite incapable of such predictions, I can affirm with much less uncertainty than in the vaticinations of these pedants uneducated people who believe they know everything or manipulate us, that the answer to the question is yes.

it is all the more funny that it is what you do permanently as "vaticinations of these uneducated pedants who believe they know everything or are manipulating us" Clearly everyone is manipulating the others! :frown:

Hello everyone

Personally, I just found a great gift idea on the site

code: Select all

http://www.capamazonia.com
, they sell plots of the Amazon in order to offer them to your loved ones. For 30 € you receive a title deed and you help to keep a plot of forests in the Amazon, an explanatory catalog and a tonka bean are also provided allowing you to make a dessert at home ... I found it great and more it protects nature. My girlfriend really enjoys the gift !!

What if we started to move around a bit? Or we will do as with the pandemic and wait until we are well inside to move ...
I live near a bitumen asphalt mixing plant. After some research, I was able to realize the health and environmental risks associated with this kind of installation. At first, my desire was to close this factory in the heart of the city, but after reflection, I tell myself that this would only shift the problem. My research also allowed me to realize that alternative solutions exist and it is for these reasons that I decided to put online a petition calling for the end of the use of bitumen in the manufacture of roads. The current health crisis is terrible and is straining our health system. It is important to give the maximum of resources to hospitals, but wouldn't reducing the pollution that affects citizens be a good way to relieve hospital centers?

All these reasons prompted me to put online a petition calling for an end to the use of bitumen in the manufacture of roads.
