ARTE launches "Missions Spring", the largest participatory science survey on spring 2012

ARTE presents Missions Printemps, the largest participatory science survey on 2012 Spring. As early as the 29 February 2012 and during 12 missions, the public will be invited to help scientists collect as much data as possible in a short time on how climate change affects animal and plant species

While the signs of global warming have never been so glaring, most surveys have shown the year 2011 as the hottest year since the beginning of the twentieth century, ARTE, in co-production with Camera Lucida and the CNRS Images, offers Spring Missions: the largest participatory science survey organized on 2012 Spring.

A major device

Missions Printemps is a transmedia and participative project. This operation proposes to the general public to rediscover the nature, thanks to the tools and the possibilities of investigation and sharing that allows the web 2.0.

The objective of Missions Printemps is to mobilize the widest possible audience in order to answer the urgent request of the scientists: to collect a maximum of data in a minimum of time on the way the climatic change affects the animal and vegetable species. A participative website as a playful lever at the service of a citizen approach.

Missions Spring will be set up the 29 February 2012 and throughout the spring with a participatory website, an application for Smartphone, a series produced for the web presenting the species to study and 12 missions, launched each week, via the web , the antenna, the social networks and the scientific press, adult and junior, will call the general public to make observations in the nature of varied species: from the earthworm to the hazel, passing by the lilac or periwinkles.

Citizen observations

Throughout the season, the Spring Missions will be presented with videos in which scientists will call on Internet users to participate by explaining the issues and the protocol to follow: tracking the nests of swallows, record the cuckoo's song, count the butterflies by day in his garden ... Observations, in the form of geolocated and dated photos, taken according to scientific protocols
precise, will be collected and analyzed by the scientific partners of the project such as the CNRS, the National Museum of Natural History or the League of Protection of Birds ...
These programs are at the heart of this web-series: scientists in the field, participants, experts will explain to Internet users the foundations of their commitment. An unprecedented opportunity for the general public to get involved in observing the various recurrent and seasonal phenomena of nature, to dialogue with the scientific world through our partners, to understand the approaches and methods of scientific investigation and research. in this way, to understand the issues and consequences of climate change.

And after?

The results of the various missions will be analyzed by its scientific referent and will be represented graphically. They will evolve according to the participation.
A results reporting program will then be broadcast on the ARTE antenna, to review the overall operation that will culminate in June, with the broadcast of a great documentary 52 mn, directed by François-Xavier Vives , on researchers studying the impact of climate change.

On the occasion of the launch of Missions Spring, the ARTE website also launches GREEN MAG, its "Environment" section, which will provide access to the best of online green information and environmental arte.tv files. to throw, The world according to Monsanto, The mystery of the disappearance of the bees ...).
