Thermal formwork to improve the insulation of a (very) badly insulated roller shutter box

by Christophe » 24/10/22, 11:01

I have a roller shutter box, installed in 2008, which was a real energy sieve: only 5 mm of expanded polystyrene insulation, I don't even understand how it's possible in 2008 when the frame is a K 1.1 ...

So I decided to make a removable box (it is just placed on it) to improve the thermal insulation of this thermal bridge!

The principle is very simple :

a) EPS sheets glued to the front of the box.
The box can be dismantled by clipping if necessary.

I couldn't put any on top or below for space reasons, on the sides yes but hey I forgot : Mrgreen: will have to be content with wood at this level...

b) A 25 mm raw wood cladding, direct from the local sawmill (larch or Douglas fir)

The 2nd layer of insulation is missing in the photos...forgot to take a photo.

The assembly site, boards screwed, was done "on site" to fit well.

To disassemble in case of maintenance, simply pull on the cladding.

Thermal camera analysis shows it works well 8)

The camera is good, but above all you must feel a considerable difference in comfort.

Me, I'm not chilly enough : roll: but the thermal camera yes: the box went from all blue to all green compared to the walls (insulated with 80 mm of PIR)! : Mrgreen:

I'll have to iron it when the cold winters arrive...

Not chilly, not chilly... it depends how much you heat up... : Cheesy: You have to buy turtlenecks (to replace moths)

Apparently they waited until now to buy some at the Élysée...
But on the official photos, still none is wearing one... : Idea:

It's something like that I did a few years ago, in addition to the tp, there is also the sound gain ....

Ah yes the sound, I didn't think about it but hey I'm in a very quiet area...

Can you show yours?

I don't eat that bread : Lol:

There's nothing to see, there's placo above, and I didn't take any photos at the time.

What prompted me to do at the time, in the first room, was the noise, because secondary road with a little traffic.

Then when I had the skin of shagreen of the insulator, that encouraged me to make on several.

The pb, it is in the event of problem of the shutters, must "break" to have access to it, with the original box... I made a species of on-box.

That's why my formwork is removable...then you have to like the raw style...it must be my Viking side : Mrgreen: ...but nothing prevents making an identical formwork in placo, it's just a little more boring to do because you have to make a load-bearing structure and more fragile to handle given the spans...

Didn't you specify that your roller shutter was electric or does it deploy from the outside by crank?
