Cuicui, the basic principle of genetics is to choose from a (plant) population, the seeds of the individuals who best express the targeted characters. Knowing that the choice of certain criteria is necessarily at the expense of others ... It is a matter of compromise that requires a very clear vision at the outset, as to the result sought.
I am familiar with certain approaches to varietal selection, but I admit that I have no experience with the methods of Michurin, and the document of Rabbit (filled with "shells" that make it painful to read) doesn't mean much to me, except, perhaps, a reference to juvenile plasticity, but in a very particular setting.
Tomato growing, an example to ponder
It is true that I had not sought to select plants capable of surviving in difficult terrain.Ahmed wrote:Cuicui, the basic principle of genetics is to choose from a (plant) population, the seeds of the individuals who best express the targeted characters. growing tomatoes
Personally I get the first tomato sprouts that grow spontaneously in my greenhouse everywhere. I hope to get hasty and resistant tomatoes. I do the same with potatoes that grow in the fall and manage to spend the winter in the garden, but it is true that we have mild winters (by the sea) with little jelly. The future will tell us what it is ...

1) we evoke observations here, we are still far from generalized scientific dogma. Experimenters wanted!
2) just because one "genre" adapts in a certain way, does not mean that another "genre" will do the same.
I don't understand why the tomatoes in Lodève are so smart and adapt so quickly (they "understand", in a way) and the millet in Chad so stupid
