How is this number of deaths calculated?

I have never found the criteria used anywhere.
On the other hand I saw figures of numbers of deaths according to pollution, which, if we applied them to Parisians of the years 60/70 where the air was much more polluted than today, amounted to saying that the third of them should have died.

I actually think that 30% of the Parisian population of the 60s and 70s died today !! : Cheesy:

Coronavirus: containment improves air quality in New Delhi
With the containment measures linked to the Covid-19 epidemic, New Delhi is breathing again. Air quality has improved significantly in the Indian capital.

23/04/2020 franceinfo

Since March 25, 1,3 billion Indians have undergone confinement, even if in places, it is easing. Before Covid-19, New Delhi was one of the most polluted capitals in the world. Little by little, its inhabitants find a blue sky and a cleaner air. "It is certainly the best air we have had in several years. If not in our entire history," says Siddharth Singh, author and researcher in climate policy.

it will perhaps (but hey I doubt it given the short human memory) finally convince of the need to slow down and refocus on the needs deemed essential, and no longer mass consumption.

In the end, it's even worse than we thought ... maybe that's why we are confined in the end? : Cheesy: : Cheesy: : Cheesy:

Air pollution kills more than 4 times more people every year than covid ... in almost total silence ...

One in five deaths worldwide is linked to air pollution

A new study, published on February 9 in the scientific journal Environmental Research, estimates that 20% of deaths in the world are linked to air pollution caused by fossil fuels. Asian countries, especially China and India, are the most affected.

Pollution caused by fossil fuels was responsible for more than 8 million premature deaths in 2018, or 20% of the adults who died in the world. The study, published on February 9 in the journal Environmental Research, doubled previous estimates. China and India alone account for half of this balance. The toxic cocktail of fine particles generated by the combustion of oil, gas and especially coal is responsible for at least a quarter of deaths in half a dozen countries, all in Asia.

These estimates are based on satellite data and surface surveys intended to determine the concentrations of fine particles PM2,5. To refine the table and ensure that the particles come from fossil combustion, the team of researchers used a 3D model of atmospheric chemistry, coupled with CO2 emissions data from different sectors (industry, aviation ... ) and NASA air circulation simulations. Once the concentration of PM2,5 was known, they looked at their impact on health, based on recent studies showing that the risk had until then been underestimated.

Decreased life expectancy

If Asia is particularly affected by air pollution, France is not spared either: in mid January, the scientific journal The Lancet ranked Paris fourth among European cities where the number of deaths linked to air dioxide. nitrogen (emitted mainly by road traffic) is the most important. In the French capital, air pollution 2 deaths, or 575% of total mortality in 7.

"We often talk about the danger of burning fossil fuels in the context of CO2 emissions and climate change. The potential health impacts are overlooked," said one of the co-authors, Joel Schwartz, of the Chan School of Public Health of Harvard University. According to previous research, air pollution shortens life expectancy by more than two years, on average. Once again, Asia is particularly affected, with a reduced life expectancy of more than four years, compared to eight months in Europe. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), air pollution (which includes pollution from cooking or heating in homes) kills 7 million people per year, of which 4,2 million are linked to outdoor pollution.

Compared to other causes of premature death, air pollution, which causes heart or lung disease, kills 19 times more people each year than malaria, 9 times more than AIDS, or 3 times more than alcohol .

ps: biomass, especially wood, also emits particles ... so we cannot put 100% of the responsibility on fossils ...

and if all are gathered at the same time, all that remains is to add the covid. : Cheesy:
