Let’s stop ruining our soil!

Author
Frederic Denhez

Editor
Flammarion

Description
The equivalent of a studio: here is the surface of fertile land from which France is amputated every second, under the pressure of tarmac, suburban areas and hypermarkets of which our country is champion. How is such a situation possible, when we are already struggling to feed a world population in full explosion?

Frédéric Denhez conducted this corrosive investigation to find out, exploring the territory, probing “conventional” or converted organic farmers, mayors, researchers, etc. And what he discovered freezes the blood: not content to become scarce, the soil can no longer provide the services that make it invaluable. Leveled, dismembered, left bare, plowed deep, subject to worrying pollutants and speculation ... the deterioration of this common good millennia, guarantor of our food and our landscapes, calls for a deep revolution of mentalities.

Preventing thinking in circles, the author proposes a series of solutions to be adopted urgently, while going back on a good number of received ideas such as the interest of all organic, the benefits of "zero carbon", etc. A shocking book, at the confluence of the evils afflicting our society.

I don't know what this book is worth.

But it tackles a real subject, a question that has also been close to my heart for a long time. In Alsace, we lose the equivalent of the surface of a village, often in the best land in the world (the "loess" = wind silt from the Alsace plain; a gift of nature; finally, wind deposits in from China, during the last ice age; apparently, the north wind often blew, from the East !!). The more "crappy" lands, less well located, farther from axes and centers, remain wasteland or vague pastures ...

A little central planning would not hurt. But only disheveled liberalism on the rating! Suicidal....
