Water: Half of the water tables do not have a sufficient level for the season

14th January 11

The water tables concerned are located in Alsace, in Vendée, in Roussillon and in the Rhône valley ...

An unusual situation for the season. As of November 1, more than half of the water tables in France were "at a moderately low to very low level," the Bureau of Geological and Mining Research (BRGM) said on Wednesday.

"About a third of the aquifers (28%) display a moderately high to very high level" and "the remaining fifth (21%) is in the middle", according to a press release. "This situation is not very normal for this autumn period for which we generally observe a first incidence of winter recharging," notes the BRGM.

"September and October correspond to the first months of recharging expected"
The water tables with low levels are located in the Alsace plain, the south of Vendée, the Roussillon plain or the Rhône valley upstream and downstream from Lyon, according to the press release. "The downward trend in levels is still very widespread," continues the BRGM.

“This situation is not very usual for this fall period since September and October correspond to the first months of expected recharge, which is not the case markedly this year. »After an excess of water in the spring, the rainfall was insufficient throughout the summer and a large part of the fall in France. This water deficit combined with non-standard temperatures has accentuated the dryness of the surface soils, and has prevented the underground aquifers from filling up normally.
