Farmers pushed back with tear gas

by recyclinage » 17/12/09, 11:13

Several dozen farmers demonstrated Thursday morning outside the Elysee Palace in Paris to denounce the state's agricultural policy and the drop in their incomes. The 70 demonstrators blocked rue Saint-Honoré before being dislodged by the police using tear gas and pushed back to a nearby street.

According to Damien Gressin, president of the Young Farmers of Ile-de-France, the demonstrators came aboard six buses and 21 vans. "There have been arrests," he said. Angry farmers, who have spread straw on the road, accuse Nicolas Sarkozy of "despising agriculture" and "condemning one of the only French economic sectors with a trade surplus amounting to billions of euros".

"By his action, Nicolas Sarkozy gives up effectively defending agriculture, leaving the United States and India to pursue a strategy of economic and political power in order to assert the supremacy of their 'green power'", they add in a press release distributed during their action and signed by the Young Farmers. In 2009, the average annual income of farmers stood at 14.600 euros, down 34% compared to 2008, a year already marked by a sharp decline of 20%, according to the accounts published by the government. The FNSEA, the first agricultural union, speaks of an unprecedented level for thirty years.

The Minister of Agriculture, Bruno Le Maire, expressed his support for farmers on France Inter on Thursday morning. He understands their "anger" and their "dismay".
