Yes, you have less thermal inertia of the ground (rising heat) ...

You can even "pre-refrigerate" it (by misting / ventilating or refrigerating) ...

Oh, it's going to be some fun at home again, when my husband finds out that after putting the extra tomato and co. In the ornamental garden, and having turned the veranda into a sweet potato jungle for the winter (sorry my husband, I really did not think that the 30 cuttings would all take, really not), I am going to invest the fridge to refrigerate my seedling terrines next summer. Well he's starting to know me ...

- "Eat the terrine!"
- "Not the bottom one, in potting soil"
- "Take the one with the boar, above!"

This year the leeks I put them under a fine mesh net to avoid worms. I planted them maybe a little too densely.
The result, no worm, but leeks as big as the thumb with 15 to 20cm of white and about 1m of green leaf.
Has it ever happened to you?
Last year without a fillet and almost as dense I had leeks 2 to 3cm in diameter and shorter puff pastry.

here I only grow winter leeks. Sow in March-April in a deep terrine, then 2 transplants, always in fairly deep containers.
Planting between the 14th and the end of July, or even mid-August, in well-enriched clay soil, burying 3/4 of the plant after having severely dressed it. Never had a pb.
Harvest from January with barrels as big as my wrist and foliage of 30 to 40 cm. But what a job to get them out of the ground!

I also put a net because in recent years the leeks were hardly edible because there were so many worms.
I wondered how long to leave this net. I put it on August 10, removed November 15.
It is true that they are not very big but at least there are no worms.

The leek maggot is one of those parasites of fairly recent introduction (2003, coming from the East, arriving in Alsace), and therefore not having many natural enemies (even if in the regions of introduction, it it seems that some auxiliaries of other flies are interested)

My neighbor put his leeks in a net this year and I see that he is harvesting large specimens at least 4cm in diameter ... is there also a question of variety?
For my part, leeks grow for a whole year before they are big enough to eat and still on the same line there are big differences in size. This year I will put an anti insect net.
