By making my mini harvest (2 pumpkins and 1 butternut) from my vegetable garden of the ultra lazy (not looking for I beat you all level laziness !! ) I noticed that one of the 2 potions was cracked in 2 places ... there came out a kind of whitish gel ...
I imagine that it is a species of biological protection against parasites or rotting (or even eggs of something ???) ...
Anyway, what exactly?
ps: the pumpkins were high (tail) against the ground they probably did not yellow well for this reason ... the face on the ground was more yellow than the rest ...
White vegetable gel on a cracked pumpkin, what is it?

Re: White vegetable gel on a cracked pumpkin, what is it?
frankly I have never seen that ...
Does this remind me of a bacterial development?
I imagine that the tissues of the pumpkin are liquefying below?

Re: White vegetable gel on a cracked pumpkin, what is it?
Ah, that is rather laconic as an answer:
That does not say what it is exactly ...
For excessive watering if there was one it is by sky ... never watered except at the plantation!
Possible excessive watering or disease due to a biting insect, if the fruit does not rot it will be excess water and the fruit will be consumable

No it was not rotten at all below ... when taking photos ...
This is why I thought of a kind of biological protection which the pumpkin would produce ?????
After washing and a few "warm" days the cracks have not changed at all (except drying out) but it is a little soft (beginning of rotting?) On 2-3 cm on one side of the more pronounced crevices ... I will attack the soup quickly what!

It's the right decision lol!Christophe wrote:I'm going to attack the soup quickly!
Perhaps a lack of watering during the dry period and the squash caught up during the rainy period. The skin has cracked because of this too rapid growth.
This is what happened to my plum tree, where it was necessary to eat the fruits quickly, because torn skin they do not keep.
The tear is too far apart for the squash to heal, moreover, since there is no more sap arriving, it can no longer do so.
Bacteria and yeasts must have started their meal and multiplied.
Lately I've had zucchini that must have been punctured by worms in contact with the ground. Like you, a kind of Latin comes out of the holes. I did not take care of it immediately, so I had to throw it in the compost due to accelerated rot.

I also favor a "biofilm" of bacteria. As this dries up, the bacteria calm down ...
NB: Fortunately, the vast majority of bacteria is absolutely harmless! Do not panic for the few terrors, such as Botulism, carbuncles ...

Re: White vegetable gel on a cracked pumpkin, what is it?
Okay so I attacked the kitchen with the "split" pumpkin ...
When I cut a not very pleasant odorous juice came out and not that a little ... in short it started to rot from the inside ... so I did well not to let the situation drag on ...
After cleaning and cutting out the rotten ends there is still plenty to do:
Here, so 2 pumpkin quiches (homemade recipe I don't know what it will give !! Answer soon ...) and a few liters of soup are ready!
ps: I think that a few days ago, we had at least already a night frost according to some brownish leaves ... and the pumpkins were still outside at that time ... if that can help analyze this gel (not the cold, the white eh ^^) ???

Re: White vegetable gel on a cracked pumpkin, what is it?
Super good pumpkin quiches !!
The recipe is the same as a zucchini quiche ... only better (sweeter and less bitter)!
Otherwise I left 2 parts of sliced pumpkins at room temperature for 24 hours, result: 1 to 2 cm of "rotten" on the yolk ... in short, it doesn't hold anything at all (well, it's more than organic!)!
