FLEGT, or "moralization" of the timber trade

by Ahmed » 03/06/13, 22:27

Since early March, the EU has established FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance and Trade).
Based on the startling observation that 15 to 30% * of timber trade results from illegal logging, this new regulation aims both to limit this scourge, but also to re-establish less "unfair" competition between those who log legally and others.
Let us first note the vague estimate, between 15 to 30%: this is quite logical since what is illegal is never declared, by definition ...
It should also be noted that the two ambitions claimed are very different in nature: on the one hand we want to stop "wild" deforestation (Amazonia, for example), on the other to protect local (European) interests under the very practical pretext of virtue (which we would have a monopoly on, wouldn't we?).
Finally, note that illegal exploitation does not only concern Asian or African countries, but also former countries of the Soviet bloc.

With regard to the interests at stake in this trade, there is very little chance that a significant change will occur, but all of this "occupies the ground".

Moralism is a heavy tendency of the moment which is used to throw on others responsibilities (sometimes very real, like here) by discarding the damage inflicted on nature in a completely legal and ordinary way ...
