A team of researchers from the Japanese company Taisei Corporation has developed biotechnology to purify soils contaminated with chemicals. During a test carried out by the company, 100 kg of soil containing four times the maximum concentration of dioxin authorized was placed in a container and mixed with the cleaning enzyme.
Dioxin returned to legal level within an hour. According to scientists, this enzyme is able to overcome many toxic chemicals such as polychlorinated biphenyls. This process will be marketed and should be available before the end of 2006. It will be invoiced around 700 euros per tonne of soil treated.
