Eco-packaging rewards SMEs and committed communities

by Christophe » 17/11/06, 10:17

For the second year, Eco-Packaging presents its Ecotop trophies to local authorities which have successfully completed an approach to optimize their selective collection and to companies which have developed an approach to prevent their packaging.

By organizing the first edition of the Ecotop trophies in 2005, Eco-Emballages wanted to create a bridge between the companies responsible for packaging waste and the communities responsible for collecting it efficiently. The Ecotop trophies therefore aim to reward on the one hand Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises which have started a process of reducing packaging and on the other hand local authorities which have optimized their selective collection.

To participate in Ecotop communities and companies must be members of Eco-Emballages. More specifically, to be selected, SMEs must have a turnover of less than 100 million euros, have no person in charge of packaging within the company but have planned to reflect on the subject. To help them make this project a reality, Eco-Emballages has partnered with the ESIEC (Higher School of Engineers in Packaging and Conditioning of Reims) in order to provide a final year engineering student.

For the second edition of Ecotop, the jury made up of ESIEC and Eco-Emballages therefore selected 17 companies which each hosted a student engineer for 14 weeks, as part of their industrial end-of-studies project. Three of them were chosen at the end of the students' defense on the basis of reproducibility of the approach, on the performance obtained on packaging (recyclability, tonnages avoided, etc.), the impact on costs, the creativity of project and the effective implementation of short or medium term recommendations.
