Hello ,
I would like to know what is the best place in a garden to position a composter?
Indeed, I bought a wooden composter (treated pine) and I prefer to ask if you have advice to give.
As long as I think about it, should a composter have a lid?
if yes, why ?
if not why ?
and if a cover is needed, would a tarpaulin placed on top of the composter suffice?
Thank you

Where to place a composter?

Bucheron, who specializes in compost, will respond better than I do. Here is what I know about placing the compost:
a) not too far from the "kitchen"
b) not too close to the neighbors (visual + smell)
c) not too far from use (vegetable patch)
d) semi shaded place, never due south (otherwise it dries up)
e) a cover yes but not mandatory, it depends on the rainfall in your region, in all cases water must arrive and the CO2 must go (so especially no "complete" hermetic cover style tarpaulin )
That's all I think ...

Hello ,
so i tried to find a correct place
superform, I put it on the ground, between two hazelnut trees
christophe, mine is a wooden composter, it looks like that
and made 700litres, I had it bricomarché for 39.90 €
on the other hand, I think I made a mistake, yesterday I put waste thuja, it seems that it is not good, what is your opinion on the pieces of thuja in a composter?

We have exactly the same type of composter. We bought it at the time, but I would have made it to measure with waste pallets!
I am not enough botanical specialist to say that thuja is not good in a compost: pkoi according to you is not good?

Hello,
Thuja, like other conifers, is not good for compost. It contains substances that prevent the work of bacteria.
Of course it is the dose that makes the poison, a very small amount, it does not matter.
To compost thuja in large quantities, make a special heap (long-term ....).

Ah I suspected it.
Kk1 would have a list of plants to avoid composting? (Lumberjack?)

Well for what to compost it's easy: everything that is biodegradable (for example: we put the soiled paper towels there), some say not to put meat (because of the animals that it could attract) but we put it anyway ... sometimes we find bones on the other side of the garden
In any case, the meat does not prevent composting ...
What would be interesting would therefore be a list of plants to avoid ... but in general everything that is "natural" will end up composting ...
It all depends on the real purpose of your compost: get quality compost quickly or limit the collection of your waste?

highflyaddict, the ones in black plastic, the quantity of thuja was more important, but I spent all this under the mower to chop the pieces and therefore, there is a little more than half of a garden trash can
Chistophe, the aim of the composter is above all not to go to the landfill to throw waste that comes from our land, from herbs or plants feeding on what is in our soil, when we could use it as compost to enrich the soil, rather than having to pay to buy it
now I think a quick compost would be good, but hey, we will do it over time
