Composting in collective housing ... The test has started ... Zinfos974.com, 02/07/10

Since Wednesday, Cité Franklin in l'Etang-Salé has been experimenting with "composting in collective housing". A novelty in Réunion, the objective of which is to reduce household and similar waste collectively.

We knew the composters for individual houses. They are now being tested collectively in the South, at Etang-Salé, on the initiative of the Inter-municipal Community of Solidarity Cities.

At the heart of this project in which some forty residents of the Cité Franklin de l'Etang-Salé-les-Hauts were associated, a partnership between the Environment and Energy Management Agency (Ademe), the association "Cité La Forêt" and the municipality. It took nearly five weeks for the project to see the light of day and for two 750-liter composters to be delivered. It was last June 23.

For the experiment to be viable, one condition was necessary: 20% of volunteers from the housing group had to take part in the project. They are 31% to have answered the call of the mediators of the environment. Equipped with their composting guide, the inhabitants were able to start their composting action on Wednesday, under the watchful eye of the members of the "Cité La Forêt" association. An action which should promote the reduction of household and similar waste and the improvement of their recoverable quality. An action also to sensitize the many children of the residence to waste reduction.

Composting on the Civis territory

It has now been nine years since the EPCI du Sud (public establishment for inter-municipal cooperation) has started distributing composters to willing households. Since 2006, no less than 5.699 composters have been made available to individuals in all of the five member municipalities, with a peak in 2008 for 1.162 composters distributed.

According to Ademe, one of the partners in the experiment in progress at Etang-Salé les Hauts, a composter would avoid 243 kilos per year and per composter of green and kitchen waste. In 2009, "this represents, for example, a potential avoidance of 160 tonnes on the territory of the Civis", specifies the inter-municipal association of the South.

Set by ADEME, the main objective of this program is to reduce household and similar waste to a minimum of 7% in five years. A significant percentage when you know that this same waste increases by more than 1% each year.
