Denmark inaugurates the biggest electric ferry in the world

In Denmark, the world's largest electric ferry, Ellen, made her first commercial trip last Thursday. The ship, which will cross between the ports of Fynshav and Søby in the south of the country, has a capacity of 4,3 megawatt hours. This allows him to travel a distance of forty kilometers with a fully charged battery. The ship can carry two hundred passengers and thirty cars.
According to the Swiss company Leclanché, battery manufacturer of the new ferry, Ellen will prevent an annual emission of two thousand tons of carbon dioxide and 1,4 tons of sulfur dioxide.
Starting in September, the Ellen will perform 5 at 7 daily rotations between Fynshav and Søby. A crossing lasts about seventy minutes. Danfoss Editron, the Danish company that built the ferry engines, points out that Ellen's range is seven times larger than what her designers expect.
"The Ellen shows that longer regional routes could be provided exclusively by electric ships," said Ole Wey Petersen, Mayor of îlerø Island, where the port of Søby is located. The ferry sails from Søby to Fynshav, a port on the Als peninsula. He himself hopes that the electric ferry will become a tourist attraction.
The Ellen is sixty meters long and thirteen meters wide. The vessel is equipped with an aluminum bridge, which gives it a greater lightness compared to a steel construction. This detail allows him to save even more energy and develop his range accordingly. The furniture on board has also been made from recycled paper.
Shipping is fully gearing up for the new International Maritime Organization (IMO) sulfur emission standards that will come into effect next year. According to experts, the absence of sulfur emissions from ships such as the Ellen pleads for their next generalization.
The Ellen is also a perfect illustration of the efforts being made in Denmark under the ambitious national climate plans. The new socialist government, which came to power in June, has pledged to reduce its 70% emissions by the end of the next decade
