That's why they built a thorium reactor.

If it weren't for the set of associated risks, in particular but not only the risk of crash as with any aircraft, the idea is not technically delusional. Compactness, low weight, long autonomy compared to the Jet fuel version.
It is not surprising that soldiers who do not reason on the same statistics as civil aviation are interested.
Obviously, the disadvantages must still outweigh the advantages ...... even in the military.

Pluto is pretty bad as a concept ... except in the case of apocalyptic use ...

The engine also acted as the missile's secondary weapon: the radiation and direct neutron emissions emitted by the reactor, devoid of armor, would make people sick, injure or kill all forms of life crossed on the way. The stream of radioactive fallout dispersed in its wake would poison enemy territory, and its strategically selected impact site would receive a significant dose of radioactive contamination "

Has this thing ever flown? Kennedy had ended the project, if I remember correctly.
Edit: Yes, it flew, not the merchant's orange!

Fortunately, the firing of a nuclear weapon is a little more complex than a chemical explosive! I was unaware of this event:

Dialogue from the film "Les Barbouzes"

Boris Vassilieff
- And now, the monster, how do you get rid of it?
Eusebio Cafarelli
- Well, I suggest something of a good woman, uh, like, uh, herbal tea, you know, poor health by plants ...
Boris Vassilieff
- Oooh, it's a bit sad, no I would prefer something more removed, more cheerful, something ... like that!
Hans Muller
- What is that ?
Boris Vassilieff
- That? A slow derivative of nitroglycerin ... Five-six drops in the soup and the patient explodes! Poum! Inside !
Eusebio Cafarelli
- Listen Boris, old man, stop playing with your little products, otherwise one day you will blow our heads off! Huh ...?

Boris Vassilieff
- Oooh ... if you prefer DIY ...!
