Question asked because I do not know the answer.
Black, white, red, green or other ... does the color of the pond have an influence on the temperature of the water ???
Or no ???

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
the greatest amount of sun energy is in the visible spectrum: so the more the pool is dark seen from the sky the better it absorbs the light: so a black pool will absorb more than a light blue pool
if have seen the clear blue pool it is the proof that a large part of the light crosses the water and is reflected on the bottom
when the depth of water is very large all the light is absorbed by the water, but it takes at least 50 meter of depth
the noticeably dark color does not indicate that the infra red or ultra violet absorption is maximum, but the infra red and ultra violet do not contain the maximum of sun energy
other note, the most common black pigment, carbon black is also absorbing in infra red and uv ... so a black polyethylene tarpaulin makes the maximum

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
It depends if the pool is in the sun or not

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
Hello,
Is the effect of a black tarp on the surface the same as a paint of the same shade under a meter of water?
Should already make a radiative budget to know https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bilan_rad ... e_la_Terre

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
a black background has an advantage: it's the bottom that heats and all the heat stays in the water
a black tarpaulin on the surface overheats a layer of water on the surface ... the temperature on the surface increases, and it loses heat by radiation
with a tarpaulin on the surface it is essential to operate a pump that standardizes the temperature
complementary idea of solar heating: photovoltaic filtration pump: the stronger the sun, the stronger the pump ... and it's good when it's hot that you have to filter the most

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
Attention I only talk about the color of the basin without tarp ..
So a priori black pool would warm more water than a pool of another color?

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
Yes quite ... but especially by the effect on the edges (inside or outside if not buried pool) because there is little chance that the solar IR radiation crosses 1m of water without a lot of losses ... the essential thermal energy will be absorbed by the water before ... There are electromagnetic equations that can estimate this ...
Just enter a body of water in the summer to see that it's pretty empty ...
But the man prefers blue water than black water ... so a black pool would be very ugly (and can be scary for some ...) ...
A good compromise, I think, for self-heated pools would be to make the outside of the wall just darker ...
Attention the effect is valid in the 2 meaning: the night the black will radiate more ... therefore will cool faster the pool ...

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
it is not only the infrared that heats ... there is also the visible ... and the sun sends us more energy by the visible than the infra red
in a normal blue pool there is only the infrared that heats the surface because quickly absorbed by the water ... but the greatest energy in visible light crosses the water and is reflected on the bottom
a black background will increase the power received from the sun

losses is exactly what we want! if the infrared is lost in the thickness of the water we are happy, he gave all his energy to the water
but there is only certain infrared wavelength which is lost well in the water ... the visible and the near infra red crosses 2 m of water without great loss thus without great absorption

Re: Does the color of the pool affect the water temperature of a swimming pool
And ... and ....
The pool loses a lot of calories by evaporation of surface water! The more dry the air (low RH) and the more wind, the more calories can be lost!
So the surface burr can be interesting, in black. Ensure a good contact water / tarp (no air bubbles). Thus the calories absorbed by the tarpaulin go to water (it is a water-cooled tarpaulin). Especially if the water circulates below.
So my top would be rather a black tarpaulin surface + circulation by solar pump below to brew the basin (and filter it at the same time) ...
But I could be wrong: I do not have a pool.
