Exnihiloest wrote:Ethics and morals are mechanisms for regulating societies. They accompany their development, in particular by their transposition into laws as the need arises, for various reasons, to channel societal practices and facts which are gaining importance. It is part of legitimate regulation.

But today, we pretend to direct, orient, constrain societal developments in the name of a moral even before they take place, before any attempt, so as to prevent the functioning of society from emerging from individual activities and their diversity, but that it conforms to the ideology of the censors.

It's suicidal. You never know in advance how you can benefit from our experiences. I will be told that we do not know all the risks either, but then this is one more reason to try, to be able to decide on the interest or not to continue. This is how Nature has progressed for millions of years, with the success we see in it. Attempts / success / failure / selection is the right method.

That the selection includes moral criteria when it comes to human activity, it is understandable, but still it would be necessary that there are concrete things to sort out, tried, tested, and not the smoky ideas that would be made one or the other on such or such possibility which one could henceforth access thanks to the progress of our knowledge.

So it's "normal" to make "bombs", to try them out while you are doing it (without asking anything from anyone if possible), and even if that should destroy everything, it is progress .... " with the success we see him "..... : roll: : Shock: : Evil:
And once the bomb is done, especially not to prevent the funders from getting into their money, so now that it is there, we use it, if possible, it's more profitable ..... The enriching a few irresponsible bastards is far above the general interest. By the time the legislation follows / frames the irresponsible, it will already have become commonplace ....
With methods of this kind we are not close to solving our social problems (global warming, pollution etc ...)

A posteriori regulation is an illusion, as emphasized Flytox: once someone crosses the line, it's easy to argue that you can't give another nation a competitive advantage and that if you choose to abstain, others will ( it is moreover obvious) ... As soon as something is installed, the devices are put in place which will endorse the situation, not by virtue of the improvement that this gives rise to, but according to the main criterion of the particular profit that some withdraw from it, even to the detriment of the collective interest.

Crispr: “A major break in history”

Between medical prowess, industrial appetites and the risk of eugenics, this molecular "Swiss army knife" which allows DNA to be modified is debated.

Aline Richard Zivohlava, editor-in-chief of Figaro Santé, wrote La Saga Crispr: the genetic revolution that will change our health (Flammarion, 2021). She discusses the various researchers who participated in writing the collective history of the discovery of the Crispr-Cas9 technology and analyzes the ethical, strategic and political questions raised by its application.

Ten years ago, researchers Jennifer Doudna and Emmanuelle Charpentier published the results of their work on the Crispr system for modifying DNA, for which they will receive the 2020 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. Can we say that they invented Crispr-Cas9?

“They have made it possible to elucidate a mystery of life, namely how bacteria defend themselves against viruses. What they have invented is the biotechnological tool that allows us to divert, for our benefit, this system specific to bacteria to create a universal system for editing the genome. More simply, thanks to fundamental research, they have created "molecular scissors" inspired by the way in which bacteria defend themselves. But we must not forget that their work is part of a collective history: from the young Spanish researcher Francisco Mojica, who in 1993 discovered the presence of palindromes in the DNA of bacteria, to the teams of Feng Zhang, who applied this technology on mammalian cells, many of them have worked on Crispr-Cas9. In any case, it is a major break in the history of our human species. »

What can be the applications of this technology for human health?

“The potential is considerable. Some genetic diseases are caused by the incorrect position of certain very specific letters on the genome. However, the molecular Swiss army knife that is Crispr-Cas9 technology can identify the piece of DNA in question and inactivate or replace it. The first results are very promising. In 2020, the first woman benefited from this treatment to treat sickle cell disease, a serious blood disease. Today, she's fine, it's a miracle. We deal with genetic diseases because it is "easier" but tomorrow, we will be able to find systems for cancers. It should also be noted that it is an easy and inexpensive technology, which is exceptional. »

At the end of 2018, a milestone was reached: Crispr was used on human embryos. What happened?

“Information about 'genetically modified babies' is very scarce and partial. We simply know that a Chinese researcher, He Jiankui, genetically modified three human embryos whose fathers were HIV carriers, with the aim of protecting children from the virus responsible for AIDS. Not much is known about the health of the three girls who were born from this experiment, but they are said to be alive and well. »

This Chinese researcher was sentenced to three years in prison, from which he has just been released. Why did his experience cause a scandal?

“While this researcher expected to be glorified, the outcry was international. All genetics and legal professionals point to the risk of eugenics. If we can manipulate any gene, we can imagine modifying a baby to be taller, stronger or whatever. In the United States, there is also a "wish list" of transhumanists which lists the genes associated with "desirable" characteristics. And, even more worryingly, Vladimir Putin mentioned this technology in 2017 to talk about "modified" soldiers who would be overpowered and fearless. »

In 2016, Monsanto (now Bayer) purchased a license to use Crispr-Cas9. To do what?

“The mining rights paid by Monsanto come with strings attached. For example, it is forbidden to use Crispr to make tobacco more addictive, nor to make the seeds sterile. Monsanto is not the only agrochemical company to have purchased these rights. Moving from the laboratory of genetically modified plants to the industrialization stage is complicated, but “Crispr generation” GMOs are already on sale. In Japan, a company has marketed a "happiness" tomato, modified to be higher in Gaba, a neurotransmitter that can reduce stress. Tomorrow, with climate change, we can imagine targeting drought-resistant genes more easily. »

Man created the tool that could eradicate his own species, conspiracy theory or not, that's a fact.
